Named for the single New Zealand hop varietal featured in the beer, Pacific Gem is the latest Genius Lab release from Green Flash. Bright and fruity, Pacific Gem has a prominent blackberry aroma and balanced, flavorful characteristics. Because of its useful, high Alpha Acid beer-bittering potential, this hop is introduced throughout the boil, reinforcing the beer’s flavor and aroma. A golden, 5 SRM grist of Premium Pale 2-row, Vienna, Maris Otter and British Crystal malts allow Pacific Gem’s distinct flavors to fully dominate the brew.

Bottled. Gold orange pour. Some citrus hops and mild malts. Pretty well done for a lower one.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Jane’s Beer and Wine. Appearance is cloudy light brown/orange with copious small brown floaters, decent sparkle, less-than-finger-width white head with poor retention and light sudsy lacing. Aroma is dank earthy resin, herbal, with mild citrus, light berry, balanced with brown-bread-like malt base. Taste is dominated by the dank, earthy, resinous bitter up front with some fruit and citrus that tries to break through in the middle but remains bitter. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with thick texture, average-to-lively carbonation and dry, bitter finish. Overall, not a pretty beer by any means and, though there is a fair amount going on it is dwarfed by the overriding bitterness.

On tap at Garrick's Head, pours a cloudy golden yellow with a medium creamy white head. Aroma brings out lots of floral dry hopping upfront, some pine, and dry biscuity malt. Flavour is very earthy and musty, with astringent earthy hops and bone dry biscuity malt. Too musty and earthy got my taste, though it could just be an old keg - hard to tell. Nevertheless, not the most well-crafted beer from Green Flash.

Pours a golden-orange with minimal head. Aroma is very grassy and so is the flavor. Not really tasting a lot of fruit or hops in this one.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with off white head that lasts. The aroma is grapefruit and pine. Medium body, citrus, pine, resin finish, good.

On tap. Pours a dark amber with little head. Aromas of wet malts and grass. Flavors of caramel malts, mild rubber, grass and burnt fruit. Not too inspiring.
