“Duchesse Cherry“ is as its name suggests a cherry beer. Brewed only with real Belgian cherries (no flavor enhancers or cherry extracts). The fruit comes from the region of Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium).

Unlike the more famous Kriek beers, the basic beer of the "Duchess Cherry" is not a Lambic. but a Flanders red ale of mixed fermentation. This beer has a top fermented base and is then matured in oak casks where it undergoes a second wild fermentation. The tannins in the foeders (very large barrel used for the storage of great Bordeaux wines) give the Duchess Cherry its sweet, fruity, refreshing and bittersweet taste.

Once the base beer is ready, the master brewer adds 20 Kg of "Kriek Gorsem" (Belgian sour cherries) per 100 liters to the beer. For 6 months, the beer macerates with the cherries. The cherries give a fresh and fruity taste to the beer which has a sweet and sour base. After 24 months of process, the beer is ready to be filtered and racked .

W aromacie wiśnia, lekki ocet, nuty korzenno-drewniane. W smaku dość wytrawne, spora kwaskowość, wiśnia, fenole, czerwone wino, trochę nut skórzanych a la bretty. Nieco przypraw i tanin na finiszu. Alkohol nie wyczuwalny, lekka słodycz od owoców. Bogate i złożone. Prawie tak znakomite jak wersja podstawowa.

Bottled, thanks Mowbeer for sharing! Ruby red body, off-white head. Sour, acidic, cherry aroma. Cherry aceto. Sweet, funky taste, cherry, light glue, some bretty toothrot, light, pleasantly sweet and sour. Prefer the choco cherry version but this is very good too.

33cl bottle from Abeervinum, Rimini, Italy. Pours reddish brown, almost plum, with Aroma is a mix of wood, leather, cherries. Body is average, with good carbonation. Taste is medium high sour, though the acetic character is less marked than in the normal Duchesse. Final is fairly long.

Bottle at 't Mouterijtje Kortrijk. Dark ruby brown red beer thin pink head. Cherry aroma with some sourness. Yep that's pretty good. I like the cherry fruit. It's sour but not overly sour. A bit sweeter than the straight Duchesse. I liked it. Woke my palate up.

Clear cherry red amber beer, good but short lived pink head. Light and semi dry palate, decent fine carbonation. Nice cherry, not too sour thanks to some oak barrel vanilla. The sourness of the base beer seems tamed here, just a touch of aceticness on the dry finish. Nice cherry beer then, tres drinkable.
