“Duchesse Cherry“ is as its name suggests a cherry beer. Brewed only with real Belgian cherries (no flavor enhancers or cherry extracts). The fruit comes from the region of Sint-Truiden in Limburg (Belgium).

Unlike the more famous Kriek beers, the basic beer of the "Duchess Cherry" is not a Lambic. but a Flanders red ale of mixed fermentation. This beer has a top fermented base and is then matured in oak casks where it undergoes a second wild fermentation. The tannins in the foeders (very large barrel used for the storage of great Bordeaux wines) give the Duchess Cherry its sweet, fruity, refreshing and bittersweet taste.

Once the base beer is ready, the master brewer adds 20 Kg of "Kriek Gorsem" (Belgian sour cherries) per 100 liters to the beer. For 6 months, the beer macerates with the cherries. The cherries give a fresh and fruity taste to the beer which has a sweet and sour base. After 24 months of process, the beer is ready to be filtered and racked .

Draft, flight pour, at The Bar on 22, 3/12/24. (1) Clear reddish color, beige head. Tart, cherry, and funk. Sweeter and less vinegary than I expected. Big punch of deer cherry over some sour / funkiness. Tasty. I liked this one quite a bit.

Draught at Skaal Sønderborg. Quite acidic aroma, acetic, fruity, with notes of nail polish remover. Clear deep red colour. Small head. The flavour has a sweet cherry note with lots of cherry pit and acid. Tastes good. Bites a bit. Late paint thinner finish.

Draught @ SKAAL Sønderborg. Pours nearly clear ruby with airy pinkish head. Dry, vinous aroma with notes of cherries and hints of malt. Dry flavour of berries and sour yeast, with sweetish notes of cherries and touches of malt. Dry aftertaste with estery, malty, and cherrylike notes. Decent work.

Bottle at BBT 9/2023. Thin body, med-high carbonation. Moderate sourness, light tartness. The sourness seems to be equal parts acetic and other acids - bordering on bothersome for me. Balanced by medium sweetness, which is rather simple, sugary, a bit of molasses. Med-light sour cherries, fermented out, which changes the character. Also does not seem to be the same schaerbeek cherries famous in Belgian krieks, rather normal simple sour cherries. All together - good beer, but not great, seems to be a bit off balance.

Roodbruin bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is fris fruitig zuur met duidelijk iets van kersen en wat rode wijn. Eigenlijk past de kersensmaak perfect in dit bier.
