Unlike the more famous Kriek beers, the basic beer of the "Duchess Cherry" is not a Lambic. but a Flanders red ale of mixed fermentation. This beer has a top fermented base and is then matured in oak casks where it undergoes a second wild fermentation. The tannins in the foeders (very large barrel used for the storage of great Bordeaux wines) give the Duchess Cherry its sweet, fruity, refreshing and bittersweet taste.
Once the base beer is ready, the master brewer adds 20 Kg of "Kriek Gorsem" (Belgian sour cherries) per 100 liters to the beer. For 6 months, the beer macerates with the cherries. The cherries give a fresh and fruity taste to the beer which has a sweet and sour base. After 24 months of process, the beer is ready to be filtered and racked .

To my dear friend Louise, who loved the original Duchesse.

Kicsi, nem túl tartós hab, sötétvörös szín. Istállós, meggyes, hordós illat. Édeskés-savanykás, istállós, balzsamecetes, meggyes, hordós íz. Közepesen testes, erősen szénsavas, leheletnyit kesernyés. Isteni finom.

Duchesse Cherry 6,3% ABV. Super gut. Note 9 Hop 2 vollmundig 5 rezent 5 Säure 7

Bottle 0,33 ltr: Clear dark red coloured brew with an fine delicious sour taste with hints of cherry, wood and vinegar. Sounds weird but tastes great.

Bottle at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours a dark ruby with a small slightly pinkish white head. The aroma is an exotic mix of molasses, balsam and cherries. In the mouth there is a brief initial burst of sweetness before it is swamped by extreme acidic bitter and sourness, with a slight juicy hint. Flavour is cherries and dark fruits. Sourness lasts into the finish. This is a decent properly sour beer – though I think I preferred the original version.

Bottle with a best date of 2023-01-22. Pours a deep burgundy with a small off-white head and lots of floaties. Lovely cherry skin and fruit aromas on the nose. As it warms brett starts to show. Hay, brett, sweet cherry fruit and dry cherry stone are all present. Intense cherry flavor on the finish with lingering brett. Quite enjoyable even a few years base the BB date.
