440ml can from the Jumbo, Grote Marktstraat, Den Haag. Poured a hazy yellow golden colour with a lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, tropical citrus fruits. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet, with a smooth, oaty, juicy pineapple grapefruit, mineral, refreshing, light hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average to soft carbonation. Much better than I was expecting. Would easily buy this again.

Dublin-made New England style IPA, from a can bought at the newly opened Jumbo supermarket in Ghent. Thick and foamy, egg-white, plaster-lacing, frothy head over a milky yellow-blonde robe with vaguely ochre-ish tinge. Luscious bouquet, very fresh, of freshly minced lemongrass, carambola, pink grapefruit zest, oatmeal porridge, fresh green melon, granadilla, lemon orchard, green mango, Key lime pie, milk. Sweet onset in a crisp, tropical-fruity way thanks to refreshing citric edges, impressions of starfruit, honey pomelo, unripe mango and maracuja, medium carbonated – in fact a bit on the sharp side for this style; nonetheless smooth, oatmeal porridge-ish core steeped deeply in citrusy, tropical and somewhat grassy hoppiness, bringing back all the maracuja, lemongrass and pomelo – but also adding a slight, very brief bitter element that subtly balances everything out. Lovely citrusiness here – balancing the sultry tropical side of it, which is not nearly the case in any NEIPA (not even the good ones). Maybe not the fanciest or most pompous of these Euro-brewed NEIPAs today – I guess breweries like Cloudwater, Deya and Verdant still occupy that spot – but a damn good one according to my standards, ticking all the boxes without overdoing it in the sweetness, ‘milkiness’ and ‘tropicalness’ like many others do. Deliciously decent.
