A malt-led bitter with hints of banana and caramel. Patriot is a very mellow pint, with a soft bitterness balanced out by delicate malt tones.

Cask at Old Bell, Derby. Pours the classic “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. Malts are to the fore in the nose. In the mouth it starts off sweet before becoming bitter. Similarly the main flavour passes from malts to hops. Some traces of autumn fruits too, plus some unwanted metallic undertones. Just a standard bitter really.

Cask at The Albion, Kingston. Low key malty aroma. Amber brown. 1 3rd of a thin bubbly head. Rich and malty with some sour berry. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Average carbonation. Slightly astringent finish. Drinkable stuff.

Half-pint, cask ale, shared with Finn at Guild Ale House in Preston. Spotty lacing from a firm white head. Amber coloured body. Smell of brown malts joined by herbal hops. Mid-dry flavour character of caramel, biscuit, wood and earthy hops. Slightly bittersweet to the finish. Pretty alright. (09.02.2019).

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at the Drapers' Arms, Bristol 2/4/2018. Amber with a slight, off-white, head. An easy drinking bitter, with some hedgerow hops, caramel and digestive malts, leading to a moderately bitter finish. Fine.
