On a rainy fall day in 2009, my five year old daughter Zoe and I were wandering the streets of Bar Harbor and stumbled across the Whale Museum. Zoe loved it. It put a smile on her face. Hopefully our ale will do the same for you. Cheers!

At a tasting, thanks Tom C, Quite big lightish red bubbly head, highly cloudy very dark red colour, aroma of pine and herbs with a strong bread backbone, strong flavor of bread and grains with an empathic herbal bitterness, just a bit heavy. Nice and enjoyable.

This really is a superior amber ale, and pulls off its excellence without wandering into the pale ale category. Pours amber with great head and lacing. Nice, subtle hop mix with light citrus and pine comes together for a great, drinkable brew. If only they put this out in six-packs, it’s the ultimate session ale. Light bitter finish. Touch of amber ale rust flavor. Tap at Churchkey.

Bottle. Deep amber body with a frothy, off-white head, mostly lasting. Aroma of caramel, toasted grain, citrus. A hint of pine. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/sticky texture, lively carbonation. Taste of caramel and grapefruit. Lingering bitterness on the scale of IPAs in addition to pine and citrus tastes.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/29/2013. Pours lightly hazy ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big pineapple, mango, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange zest, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of hop and malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big pineapple, mango, tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange zest, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, floral, grass, pine, and floral earthiness. Moderate earthy pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pineapple, mango, citrus, caramel, toast, toffee, biscuit, floral, grass, pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, crisp, and sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent hoppy amber ale. All around great complexity and balance of hop and malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle. Pours with a clear deep copper hued body with a large off white head with good retention. Aromas are very floral and hoppy from several feet away. On closer inspection: toasty and caramel notes with mild esters take equal footing with bright hoppy and citrus notes with grapefruit zest, mandarin and tea. I’m not the biggest fan of crystal (especially darker crystal) malts in my hoppy beers, but this smells decent. Flavors are slightly bitter, ice tea, caramel resin and citrus. Relatively dry considering the deep malt flavors with a nutty, lightly roasty quality and a decently heavy hand of caramel. Lots of grapefruit. Slightly earthy to papery. Very lively, almost distracting carbonation, medium bodied. Good for a style I’m not fond of.
