Bottle. Dark maroon brown color. Aroma of dark cocoa, espresso, anise. Taste is Tootsie Roll, licorice. This is the first time I’ve used the word Tootsie in a beer rating.

Tasted at the Annual Black Friday tasting. It pours a nice darkness with a mocha colored head of foam floating above. The aroma offers up dark roasted malts, some burnt malts, a sliver of toffee, malts balls and then a highly toasted bread sort of note. The taste is both lively and firm with dark roasted malts, almost burnt maltiness, some sweet toffee and dark toasted bread. Yummy stuff.

22 oz. bottle from Beer Heaven, Philadelphia, PA. Bought on 11 Oct 2012, so I’m guessing it’ s a 2011 vintage. Excellent eye, perfect Presentation, deep black with thin lasting head. Nose is chocolate, hints of spruce, licorice and bitter-sweet chocolate. (Tastes like Ghirardelli baking chips) A touch of soy sauce. Notes of licorice. Body is full and velvety. Damn, this is rich, sweet and full of roasted malts. No ABV to be found. I enjoyed this brew so much I really wish I had gotten two bottles.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Doodler. Pours a clear black with a warm reddish hue and a small brownish head. Very sweet cocoa and vanilla aroma. Rich body, heavy roast, pruney, juicy, bitter chocolate, malty bitter finish. Quite a serious Imperial Stout. 221112

Super rich, almost fully opaque deep brown coloured body with a rich one centimetre tall deep brown head - very nice looking. Aroma of tons of roast, coffee, milk chocolate (40% cacao), a bunch of lactic notes and a hint of graham crackers. Full-bodied; Super dense mouthful of chocolate and coffee with a bunch of pit fruits, caramel and toffee. Aftertaste is quite potent with a bunch of earthiness, some nuts and a lot of darkly (think Starbucks) roasted coffee with perhaps even some peat or smoked notes. Overall, a seeming super potent and pungent flavoured and feeling beer with less alcohol (my bottle is 8.8%) than assumed. Definitely a nice Imperial Stout, but the large format bottle and the heavy feel make it quite the bear to drink. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Tustin, California on 06-December-2011 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington on 31-August-2012.

Draught at Baileys Taproom, Portland as "Caldera Old Growth" (8,8%)
Aroma is really nice with roasted malt, coffee and chocolate.Flavour is dry with roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and somewhat salty licorice. Smooth and very creamy palate that becomes sticky after some sips. The coffee notes get stronger towards the dry finish. A masterpiece, reminds me of Nøgne Ø Imperial Stout.

65 cl bottle (8,8%) @ home
Salty licorice, coffee, dark chocolate. Saltiness is too strong in this one, unfortunately.
