In continental Europe people were offered only dark beers until the mid-1800. All that changed when brewer buddies Anton Dreher and Gabriel Sedlmayr left Vienna on a spying trip to the British Isles. The pals returned with the knowledge to roast malt without scorching it; a skill they had appropriated from the Brits. When the lager-yeast was “discovered” at thesame time – a radically different light lager beer was born around 1845.

Stallhagen Vienna Lager is a copper-colored, filtered, smooth and malty lager-beer for the autumn. The light-colored head is tall and lasting. In the aroma toasted bread and herbal notes from the noble hops. Taste is malty, smooth and toasty with balanced hop bitterness. Medium-bodied with elegant dry finish.

Vienna Lager is easy-to-drink classical German-style lager for the cooling autumnal days.

Draught@Amarillo, Vaasa. Amber colour with a small white head. Aroma is floral and grassy with some mild toasted and sweetish bready malts to it. Flavour is very similar with mild earthy and wooden notes. Mellow bitterness. Easy to drink as well as clean.

Bottle (K-Supermarket City). Clear amber color, small off-white head. Caramalt, malty, woody hops. Light-bodied. Light maltyness, notes of caramel, a bit bready. Clean, quite typical Nordic Vienna.

Clear, red copper beer with small head. Sweet malts, bread and cereal. As basic as it ever could be. Nice, but that’s it.

On tap at the Oak Barrel, Vantaa Airport, Helsinki. The reddish side of reddish brown. Clear with no head but quite a lot of carbonation. Smell is slightly woody and gluey, with some nice fruity notes hidden within. Very sweet with more sticky malt in the taste. Medium to long finish with a hint of more bitterness. It’s OK. Had many better Viennas in the past.

Bottled (from K Citymarket Kivihaka, Vaasa). Amber colour, mediumsized off-white fluffy head, which settles quite quickly. Aroma is wood, some mild nutty and sweet malty notes. Flavour is rather similar. Very watery. Clean, but nothing interesting, nor particularly enjoyable. Could probably be better combined with food.
