A refreshing beer of real flavour - distinctively hoppy and dry with malt aromas. Delicious served cool.
Adnams brewery has stood in the heart of Southwold for over six hundred years and "Southwold Jack" appears on our beer labels. He continues to guard over our longest-serving beer brewed here in Southwold on the Suffolk coast -The Bitter. Bitter goes well with roast meats and fish cooked in batter as the clean bitterness cuts through the slightly fatty notes and hence keeps the palate refreshed. Our Bitter also makes a good aperitif.

On handpull at Euston Tap. Pours dark brown. Nutty, biscuit, orange peel, cherry, little sulfur near the end, lingering herbal notes. Good soft body. Decent enough.

Bottle. Clear dark amber/orange featuring a nice stable white head. Aroma of citrus fruits, tea leaves, herbal hops and toffee. Taste of biscuits, lemons, malts, toffee, orange jam and tea. Dry finish. Moderate herbal bitterness. Low carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. Well this is lovely but then again I’m a certified sucker for these kinds of ales.

Bottle from Waitrose. Pours a clear dark copper colour with a thin creamy head. Aromas of doughy bread, toffee and caramel. Taste is fairly sweet with more bread, toffee and caramel notes. A subtle earthy bitterness that lasts on the finish. Thin to medium body with a smooth oily mouthfeel. Ok.

Rocky tan head left a creamy cover on a reddish brown still body. Malt, sweet & raisin aroma. Medium bodied, smooth & creamy with a clean back. Sweet, malt, raisin, chocolate & caramel tastes with a tangy bitter finish. Excellent.

Historical tick which I am adding as a rate so that I can see the impact it has on my stats. 500 Beers To Try Before You Die. A pub in the City. Decent enough bitter.

Pours a deep amber/brown, with a foamy off-white head, and the aroma of malt loaf/brown bread. Tastes initially of malt with a hit of dry, bitterness from the hops, and a hint of fruit. A very satisfying mouthfeel and a good example of an old school British bitter, leaves a dry, bitter and pleasant aftertaste.
