‘Never mix grape and grain’ – we’re breaking the cardinal rule again for our second grape harvest beer. Château Aro, a dark rubescent lager, conditioned on the freshly crushed juice and skins of pinot noir grapes from the award winning Escarpment Winery. And the result of this unholy union? Rich, complex and surprising. Remember, beer then wine, you’ll be fine.

Bottle from explosivedog from a trade, thanks: pours brownish red with a light white head. Aroma is thick grapiness, maltiness. Taste is sweet, not quite tart, woody, yeasty. Slight hints of booze. Winy.

Tap at the Freehouse, Singapore. Poured a clear dark burgundy with no life, The aroma is yeast vinous fruity. The flavour is light sweet with a dry oaky, vinous, light warm alcoholic palate with some light tannins in the finish. Now this is really quite interesting. This is more like a wine than a fruit beer. As a fruit beer it gets high ratings but I’m sure that any wine enthusiast would pour this down the drain. I’m on the fence. It’s drinkable and satisfying but would I be drinking his alongside a filet steak? I don’t think so.

Tap at Garage 91 Aro. Hazy burgundy with almost no head. Thick jammy red grapes, Bordeaux red wine, light vanilla, sweet red grapes, thick black currants, light yoghurt, grass, sugary, soft tannins. Over medium sweet, under medium tart and bitter. Full bodied. More like wine or even Port than beer, but very good.

650ml bottle. Dark with little head. Starts with malts and finishes with pinot noir. I don’t mean a hint of pinot noir, I mean pinot noir. Absolutely stunning.

An interesting concoction. Red in color. Full of grape and vinous flavor. Sweet. Fun. One is enough for me, though.
