Russian-made American porter from a 50 cc bottle shared with Goedele. Very thick and foamy, fluffy, cobweb-lacing, greyish beige, well-retaining head on a black beer with thin, hazy burgundy edges. Aroma of green coffee beans, roasted chicory, charcoal, cigar ashes, 'blood'-like iron, dried juniper berries, old dry 'herbes de Provençe', leather. Dry onset, light cured meat-like umami, very restrained in sweetness, sourish trail of roasted grains; medium carbonation, slick oily mouthfeel, feeling thicker than its ABV would suggest. Deeply toasty bitter from the start, only very light nutty 'roundness', roasty-chicory bitter finish, ashy even, the dryness and bitterness further accentuated by herbal, powdery and eventually rooty-quinine-like hop bitterness lasting for a while. Herbal, roasty and ashy bitter ending - lacking the nuttiness and caramelliness of a true porter, even an American one (if e.g. Sierra Nevada Porter is to be taken as an archetype) so in terms of 'truth to style', I dare suggest that this is not a great success - but who cares, this is an uncompromizing, bold and powerful roasted black ale, indeed a dry stout much more than a porter, but a good one at that.
