They laughed at the crazy scientists from Bamberg when they came up with their beechwood smoked malt.
Who would want the strong, savory, salty notes of stringed pastrami and cured wursts in their clean, crisp lager?
Well, a few hundred did, and they weren’t all barbecue enthusiasts. But the numbers are increasing, and we’ll do our best to spread this smokey gospel.
We teamed up with the local brewers (and bearded bird enthusiasts) from Zaganu to make sure we seduce as many people as we can with our precious... smoked ham water.

500ml can. Opalescent, yellow-ish, golden colour with average, frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Mildly smoky, pale malty aroma, hints of smoked ham, smoked sausage, a touch of beechwood ashes. Taste is watery, slightly mineral bitter and minimally ashy, diluted hints of beechwood ashes, some bitter hop. Minimally oily, watery texture, smooth and soft palate, medium, dense, mildly prickly carbonation. Very nice, harmonious aroma, quite watery and more mineral than smoky taste, light body - bummer!

Moderately smoked lager. Clean, pretty light and well-balanced. Still, just a lager, but one of the better ones. 3.5

LOOKS: Only slightly hazy bright gold, white head - looks like a real well-sedated lager!
AROMA: Smells like a proper lager: simple clean sweet bready malts and traces of doughy cereals, gentle not-too-aggressive beech-wood smoke (i.e. not spicy or pungent). I get slight medicinal/herbal note I've seen in other lagers (still dunno what it is).
FLAVOUR: The taste follows along the same lines - neither too plain malty/sugary, nor too funky rustic - a clean, more or less neutral balance of flavours. Same humble smoky notes. Very smooth and soft mouthfeel of a well lagered helles. Little actual hop presence, all the bitterness seems to be coming from the smoked malts - and they do a good job at this.
GRIPES: Of course, the amber Schlenkerla is able to get more punch from its specialty malts, and to be honest, even a pale lager can extract a bit more flavour from the base malts only - but that's me being overly picky, or course. Just a small problem - one can buy Schlenkerla at half the price.
OVERALL, drinks like a really clean, smooth and full bodied helles, with the gentle smokiness as an extra bonus. So, thankfully nope, not really sausage. And not cheesy at all (whatever they meant by this). An excellent, well crafted and precisely dialed-in pale rauchbier. And yes, I am surprised that this is a pale lager not only in its name. Kudos.
