Blueberry Jack is a psychedelic trip to flavor town. A hazy collaboration with our friends at Stillwater Artisanal Ales, it’s also the latest entry in their “Strains from Mother Nature” series. We blended together a blonde Brettanomyces-fermented ale aged in both oak barrels and foedres, then added California-grown blueberries and blackberries. After maturing, we dry-hopped the beer with reckless amounts of Citra, Mosaic and Galaxy hops for a trippy, tropical-dank aroma.

(375ml bottle from boxbeers.dk) Aroma of tart blueberry, earthy barnyard-y sort of Brett funk, a little jammy blackberry in the back, hint of oak. No real hop notes at first, but towards the end of the glass when it’s warmer and oxygenated, suddenly a pretty substantial pine and leafy character pops up. Flavour is tart blueberry and citrus up front, filling in with notes of blackberry, earthy, light jam, a bit of biting oak, some soft hoppy notes despite obvious fade, a bit of dry musty sort of funk as well, overall moderate tart, more of the berry than lactic variety. Dry finish with light blackberry seed bitterness. Light to medium body with soft carb. Pretty laid back, solid tart fruit beer with a couple of interesting accents.

375 mL bottle poured. One of the more intriguing collaborations I’ve seen in a while, glad I was able to find it. Chucks. Reddish orange pour. A ton of mixed berry on the aroma, with some watermelon and a Brett funk. Sour up front, blackberry and blueberry both. Soft funk. Extremely tasty. Fine qualities from both brewers sour styles. Very good stuff.
