Baltic porter is not an easy style to brew, nor to consume. This traditionaly strong, malty dark lager is a mountain of a beer in its classic form, however we upped the game. Only when turned towards the light can you spot a slight carmine hue, otherwise it’s as black as the bottom of the ocean. Whilst sinking into its depths, you will experience the taste and aroma of dried fruits, chocolate and a wee bit of coffee. The intense flavour pairs with a slight warmth. Not exclusive to winter nights!

330ml bottle. Opaque, darkest brown colour with average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Chocolately, roasty, dark malty aroma, hints of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, some (fruity) coffee, weak fruity overtones with a touch of plum and cherry, morello, blue grape-induced fruity spiciness. Taste is minimally sweet, chocolately and dry, roasty dark malty, moderately bitter and minimally fruity hoppy, notes of dark chocolate, some milk chocolate, fruity coffee, additional fruity hints of plum and cherry, morello, blue grapes, a plum wine-like alcoholic touch as well. Oily to viscous texture, smooth, soft and silky palate, fine and soft carbonation. Compact, focussed, integrated, minimally retracted, diffident, somehow like masking subliminal energy. Maybe the U-boat label is deliberately selected. I'm looking forward to see which aspects surface in the BA variants.

Bottle from Geers. Pours hazy black with a slowly thinning, tan head. Aroma of chocolate chips, kahlua, mocha, raw vanilla, dried fig, black tea & olive, liquorice, alcohol. Taste has sweet date, toffee, chocolate & nuts, touch of umami olive, dry, bitter middle of toast, spices & coffee ground with something vaguely leathery. Herbal hoppy finish, toasty, sweet chocolate, rather alcoholic, hinting at coffee liqueur. Medium to full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Not overly roasted, more of a 'dry' and subdued character. A bit too alcoholic perhaps.

6.11.2019. Tap at 100 piv. Only ever so slightly warming. Mostly malt centered though. Full body, med-med-light carbonation. Very rich malty character, chocolate, cocoa, all kinds of roast. Light coffee, also some rum, dark and dried fruits. Quite complex, relatively easy drinking considering the ABV. Great one Rerate, via Beermalade tasting. Med-light warming alcohol, full body, med-low carbonation. Mostly malty, medium chocolate, light deep roast, light caramel. Also med-low dark fruits. I would aim around 3,8 rating this time.

RBESG 19 Grand Tasting. Dark brown body, tan head. Sweet aroma, coffee and maltiness. Sweetish coffee and malty notes on a very dry taste in general, chocolate here and there. Quite okay.
