Bitter-sweet Red Ale, A style that you don't see around too much these days, and what a shame it is! Hawkshead's bitter-sweet, malty red is just the ticket if you fancy something a little on different! Very much a traditional beer, there's plenty of earthy and grassy notes to be found intermingled with a strong maltiness and plenty of bitter rye licks.

On cask at the Guildford Arms. Appearance - deep copper to red. Very autumnal. Nice neat head. Nose - some red fruit and toffee. Taste - redcurrants and caramel biscuits. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - nice bitter. Or is it an amber ale?

Bottle from Tesco. Ruby red colour with a light ran head. Aroma is mainly toffee and this dominates the taste too. Ok but a touch sweet.
