Appearance- dark brown with a small foamy white head. Aroma- not much at all- a bit of malt, slight hints of raisin. Taste- bitterness, vague hint of raisin and biscuit, thin mouthfeel. You have to search quite hard for any flavour, but there’s nothing offensive about it.

Nose is light malt slight cereal. Very bland. Taste is light malt leading to a little butter scotch. Slightly too fizzy. This is a surprisingly poor bitter.

Cask pints on 28 Jun 2013 at The RAF Cosford WO and Sgt’s Mess Summer Ball (of all places). Not bad, remember it being a bit thicker and richer from years ago: this seemed to be a watered down version. Looked OK: amber/golden brown body with a full off-white cap. Malts, semi-fruity nose and taste, a decent enough blend but missing deep flavours and oomph. Moved onto dark Rum and Coke after three pints.

Bottle. Chestnut brown colour, with a mild caramel malt aroma. Quite carbonated. Quite good, at least as mainstreem brewers pasteurised bottles go.

Cask at the Tin Goose, LHR T1, 25/01/13. Clear copper golden with a thin bubbly white head. Nose carries pale malts, light summer fruit, background caramel notes. Taste comprises summer fruits, light malts, some hop presence, grain. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, some bitterness in the dry finish. First time I’ve had this in 10+ years and you know what - it’s a well balanced simple bitter and perfectly drinkable. I think this beer (in my mind) has picked up a stigma of being a dud because it is a default choice in the Shit Hole Arms (TM) and therefore I’ve had a number of bad pints over the years. Better than some of the latter day twig offerings by some distance when well kept, which it was here !

(bottle) Clear, amber colour with a mid-sized and slightly tanned foamy head. Slightly toasted malty aroma with notes of caramel, shades of citrus and a tinge of dust. Mildly bitter flavour, light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Slim cara-malty base with a restrained fruit-character but spicy hops from behind; mildly bitter and caramel-malty finish. Drinkable but rather boring. 14.XII.12
