McEwan’s 70/- is a beer that’s perfect for drinking with friends. Rich in taste and creamy in texture, it’s an ale that oils the wheels of a night out. Smooth times are ahead.

The shilling categories in our beers’ names have an interesting history. In the nineteenth century the taxman charged a duty in shillings on each hogshead (54 gallons) of beer depending on its strength. The stronger the beer, the more he levied.

Keg at the Phoenix, Inverness, 25/02/23. Golden amber with a good sized just off white head. Nose is biscuit, raisins, dried fruit rinds, grains. Taste comprises stewed fruits, brown bread, toasted grains, biscuit, herb. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Not terrible for an Ian Cognito Bedfordshire rate ... first rating for nearly 4 years !!!

Tap. Seaside, Scottish coast near Belhaven. Slightly malty aroma, but not much, the smell of the North Sea is more overwhelming. Malty flavor, amber color, small head. Apricot and very little hopbitterness, the emphasis is on malt and fruit. Bland, a bit fizzy and sticky.

Keg tap at the Hole in the Wall, Dumfries. Tawny brown with a sizeable creamy head. Smells of very little: a bit of plummy/appley sweetness with some malt. Taste is pleasant enough - a fruitcake malt unless dominates - but again shockingly slight. Not a lot to this beverage at all really.

Keg at Jolly Judge. It pours clear amber with a thick white head. The nose is soft, grainy, brown caramel, raisin and sultana. The taste is smooth, creamy, toasty grain, wood, touch of pepper and leather with a dry finish. Medium body, fine carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. Quite superior to the caledonia best I had earlier today... Good looking a good mouth-feel.
