Confoundingly unpronounceable yet eminently drinkable—welcome to §ucaba, an epic barrel-aged English barley wine whose original name was undone by a two‐bit legal challenge. Big, boozy bourbon and American oak aromas combine with soft chocolate malty undertones. Complex malt flavors are framed in oak with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, tobacco, coconut and just a touch of dark cherry. §ucaba is built to last and can age for years to come (we recommend counting the years with an abacus).

Malty, sweet and slightly syrupy with some bourbony vanilla notes, hints of caramel, toffee, hops, prunes, figs and raisins. Balanced and tasty.

2018 12oz bottle from Chalumeaux, drunk 6/18/24. Clear mahogany. Dark beige head to spotty cover. Bourbon, dark fruit, excellent malt and a bit of cola and hazelnut. Not boozey. Not too toasty. Healthy wood/tannin. Rich raisin, succulent caramel, hint of toastiness. Sweet, malty but perfectly attenuated. Balanced bourbon, just enough but not too tannic or raw/coconutty. Still has plentiful carbonation. Lingering bourbon and malt. Six years old and zero oxidation.

On tap @Kool Keg. Dark brown, opaque, thin head at kool keg in Arlington. Clear but dark cola, half still, thin head pour. Heavy maple nose, caramel candy, a little fumy, brandy-ish barrel. Very thin for what it is. Caramel, vinous, quite smooth if weak barrel. Half flat & quite smooth. Don't understand the hype.

(Bottle, vintage 2016) Reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with notes of caramel, dark cherries, dried fruit, raisin, figs, chocolate, wood, vanilla and vinous hints of bourbon. Malty, vinous taste with caramel, dried fruit, chocolate, raisins, prunes, dried figs, bourbon, oak wood, vanilla, toasted coconut and a warming finish with a mild spicy bitterness. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Rich and powerful, still really well balanced and harmonious. Great slow sipping beer.
