Pours deep mahogany into a tulip. Tan conglomerate head with excellent retention recedes leaving scant sheets. Dark caramel, licorice, raisin and dried stone fruit aromas. Thick with soy and dark chocolate upfront turning to hot licorice and espresso before the warm, lasting charred earth finish.

Bottle from Beer Hop. It pours darkest brown to black with a lasting yellow - tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, coffee grounds, nutty, dark chocolate, praline, bitter - sweet vibes, umami, liquorice, dark fruits, Nutella and chewy toffee. The taste is dry, bitter, rich roasted malt, burnt toast, bitter - sweet character, nutty, toasty, praline, dark chocolate, spice, warning booze, chewy, toothy, umami, liquorice, coffee grounds, plum, prune, fig, earth and ash with a drying, charred finish. Fulsome body and moderate carbonation. A rich roasty bastard of a barley wine. A fun sipper.

Got this for 2 bucks at the market place in robinson. I'm surprised of the ABV! Big and brown he eye goes. Smell is big malt and a sense of tartness? Big thick alky bomb. Typical attributes of these styles. Probably should be aged. Warming & boozy. This is a lick yer ass beer. Yes, getting the same effects as a whisky drink. To call this wine is hilarious, but I know wheat it means, hehehh. Barley, wheat rye or whatever combo, they pretty much have the same effect and have lots of similar effects. Whew, don't drink 2 of these for lunch! Lay down lay down, lay it all down. Did I say difficult yet? Bad ass fer-sher. Be careful with this mah-fah! Pretty tuff this is. Chewy. Finishes like a 4th of July grand finale. There, you have it. Whewwwieeeee. Extra point for the alky content. Shouldah got one for my friend Brinie.

12oz bottle. Big, bold, true American style Barleywine. Huge malt tone, huge hop tone. Pleasant bitterness leads into a river of sweet medium dark malts. A slow sipper for sure. Quite excellent.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brown with a light creamy tan head. Aroma of very roasted malt, not toasted. Arguably full bodied. Dark fruits and heat. Pretty roasted malt. Lots of bitterness. Heat is detectable. Tho it's not sweet there's a Demerara flavor in it. Some cacao seems detectable in the finish. Good flavor, tho the heat pokes into that a bit. Excellent.

This seems like the same beer as the 2010 version, but Iβll repeat my rating if needed. Opaque, murky brown body with an at first absent head that slowly grew to a thin off-white ring of carbonation hugging the glass. The nose was sweet, reminding me of Black Biscuit, with molasses, brown sugar, bubblegum, and bitter hops. The body is characterized by molasses, chocolate, and chewy cotton candy yielding to a huge, intense sprucy bitterness and alcohol heat. An interesting beer with characteristics of barleywine and black IPA, though a bit harsh.

Bottle - dark ruby brown, nearly black - flavor has a bit too much roasted malt character for the style, imho, tasting almost like a barleywine blended with stout - some brown sugar, light treacle sweetness - copious hoppiness on the tail end reminds you this is an American rendition - some dark fruit and leafy earthiness late - itβs actually pretty good, but could use some age.
