A radically different beer... it has roast barley added to the pale and crystal malts. It has a deep burnished copper colour, a rich port wine aroma, a big chocolate and creamy malt palate and a dry, grainy, roasty finish balanced by hop bitterness and tart fruit. It is a remarkably complex beer that deepens and changes as you sup it.

Malt - Roasted Barley, Crystal & Pale Ale Malts
Hops - Challenger/Mount Hood

Bottle, home. Pours a hazy light amber color with a decent sudsy white head. The aroma is bready malt, apples, mild English hops, light yeast and a touch of caramel - not great. The flavor is out of whack. Itโ€™s sweet with a somewhat off-putting fruity malt flavor. Thereโ€™s almost a bad Belgian phenolic quality to the beer. The finish is mildly grassy. Mouthfeel is fine but the finish is a bit chalky.

Bottled. Rubyish amber colour, small off-white head. Aroma is fruits, earth, some herbs and mild caramelly and bready notes as well. Flavour is very similar, but the maltyness is quite much stronger.

Bottle. Pours a coppery amber with a medium sized head and lots of little bubbles on the side of the glass. Aromas are weak... a bit of malty sweetness, a little bit of an apple juice edge, and some grassiness. Flavor is similar... a fairly malty center with a bit of bitter hops around the edges and a thin palate. Itโ€™s fine enough, but just not very interesting, especially for an old ale.

50 cL bottle. Pours hazy orange with a small white head. Mild peachy and citrus fruity hops aroma. Bitter and citrusy hops flavoured, towards orange fruity, with a rather vague malt base. Light peachy and citrusy clean and crisp hops flavour and bitterness. Lasting fruity hops flavour into the far finish.

(Draught at Kaisla, Helsinki, on 2008-09-19) Amber. Clear. Medium sized quickly disappearing white head. Fruity grassy and malty nose. Full bodied dryish palate with quite a lot of carbonation. Hops, grass, salty liquorice, malts and some vegetable flavours in taste. Long lasting surprisingly soft and bitter aftertaste. Not bad at all.
