A radically different beer... it has roast barley added to the pale and crystal malts. It has a deep burnished copper colour, a rich port wine aroma, a big chocolate and creamy malt palate and a dry, grainy, roasty finish balanced by hop bitterness and tart fruit. It is a remarkably complex beer that deepens and changes as you sup it.

50cl Bottle conditioned, 4.8% ABV: BBD 21 Nov 16. Poured into an โOld Speckled Henโ badged pint vase at home on 30 Oct 15. A little too cool when poured. Lightly tanned head, full but thin covering, the body a clear reddy brown. Malts lead the way in this brew, a bitter and hoppy finish balances the initial semi-sweetness nicely and tests your taste buds too. Very drinkable in deed.

Cask at the brewpub. Aroma is very subdued, little nutty, some dried fruits mid copper coloured pour with a lasting frothy white head. Flavour is composed if light nutty grains, dried fruit, light berry. Palate is light and a little watery . Low carbonation. Not much to it really. OK but dull.

On cask at Black Bull, Coniston - Nothing like the bottled version Iโd had not an hour earlier, and nowhere near as good. Deep brown body, thick brilliant white head. Nose is more flowery than the bottle, taste is more floury. Thinner too. Looks better mind you.

Bottle from Co-Op opposite Black Bull, Coniston - As a BYOB at the local bistro, nice red body, decent off-white head. Rich nose of caramel and malts, taste has lots of rich cake fruit stuff going on, thickish palate too. Quite a decent drink.

Clear nutty brown colour with lasting head. Has some sweet, fruity malt in the aroma. Also a bit of yeast. Rather too gassy from the bottle but it settles down after a while. A very well balanced beer with fruity notes up front and a subtle bitterness in the finish.

On cask at the Black Bull. Appearance - very dark brown and pretty much opaque. Decent head. Nose - very gentle toffee and nuts. Very elusive and almost not there at all. Taste - very light and lacking in the flavours expected from the nose. A delicate amount if toffee there. Palate - light bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that pretty much disappears. Overall - the least inspiring ale of the day.

Amber-red without a head. This has a subtle sweet character with some winter type fruits evident.
