A powerfully malty approaching-sweet lager, the Doppelbock was originally brewed by Franciscan monks to get them through Lent. Matured for over 9 months this is a delightfully smooth drop which packs a bit of a punch. Originally produced in Einbeck, Germany this high gravity beer was, like many other beers, taken and perfected by the brewing houses of Bavaria. Winter release.

Bottle from Caledonian Craft Beer Merchant, Dunfermline. It pours clear mahogany brown with a sturdy light tan head. The aroma is hearty maltage, bruised banana, banana bread, cacao nibs, booze stewed raisin, fruit cake, brown bread, caramel and a splash of cola. The taste is smooth, slick, bitter - sweet, hearty maltage, over ripe banana, banana bread, dried fruits, fruit cake, toffee, toasty brown bread, warming spice, clove, cacao nibs, chocolate covered bananas and just a touch of alcohol to balance things out. Medium+ body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Can't say there are too many Scottish doppelbocks out there, but abernyte have really smashed it out of the park here.

Bottle. Clear deep golden-amber color with off-white head. Aroma is vegetable oil, caramel, toffee, a bit vanilla and molasses. Taste is the same, a bit vegetal, but lots of caramel. Oily mouthfeel with low carbonation. Ok.
