Barrel-Aged Wheat Wine
We met the great guys from Budapest's Monyo Brewing during one of our travels and found we have many similar ideas about beer. It was natural then that the conversation quickly turned to making a beer together.
The project: make a strong and unique brew using some nordic ingredients. The result: we made a Wheat Wine, added Norwegian black currants, oak-aged the beer in third-fill Breckenridge Bourbon barrels for several months, and then added just a hint of vanilla. The finished beer is as big as it sounds, vinous and tart with notes of whiskey and fruit. Recommended serving temp. 10-12°C."

330 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 12.0%. Cloudy deep brown colour, small beige head. Boozy and vinegary aroma, notes of blackcurrants and oak, hints of bourbon and vanilla. Fruity and slightly acidic flavour, notes of blackcurrants, hints of berry vinegar, more distinct bourbon, oak and vanilla now. Low bitterness. Not a beer I'll buy again.

Brun uklar med beige skum. Lukter mørke stenfrukter, svisker og fat. Fyldig. Syrlig. Smaker noe eddik, mørke stenfrukter og noe fat. Middels lang.

On tap at Kr4ft Fesztival. Deep brown, thin, quickly disappearing off-white head. It shows grains, sweet booze, some fruits, a touch of wood and bourbon and some sweetness that might as well be the vanilla. Closes with long lasting, warming and sweet finish, has medium to heavy body but still somehow easy to drink.

Bottle from brewery, many thanks. Hazy, not very nice deep brown color with minimal beige head. Aroma of bourbon, malt, caramel, dried fruits, honey, some berries, plum jam. Taste is malty with honey, berries, dried fruits, wood, vanilla, plum jam . Warming alcohol. Not full bodied for 12% ABV, boozy, but I liked it a lot.

YG 120423. Amber color with a beige head. Aroma is bourbon, caramel, dried fruit. Flavor is bourbon, caramel, alcohol, dried fruit, roasted malt, lemon, berries, wood. Powerful beer.

Bottle. An unclear brown beer with a small beige head. Some lacing. The aroma is sweet, alcoholic and almost sickening, with a touch of roasted malts, berries, wood notes, some red wine and a vague hint of lemon. It's full-bodied, lightly sourish and softly carbonated, with a warming alcohol touch. Dark dried fruit, dark berries, red berries, roasted notes, toffee, booze, wood and a red wine-like hint in the flavor. A bit acidic and heavy this one, lacking a bit on balance. 230412

Draught at Monyo Tap House, Budapest. Cloudy, dark amber colored. AROMA- pleasant alcohol, cherry, strawberry, plum, raisins. FLAVOR- moderately sweet, slightly bitter, sugar, black currant, cherry, plum, dark grapes, alcohol. Full bodied. Not so good as I expected.

Well stored bottle. Unclear amber body under a small beige head. Aroma is complex with malt, ripe berries, wood, vanilla and a mild hint of whisky. Taste like aroma, really, really smooth and balanced. Even if quite sweet it feels refreshing. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste. Great and slightly original take on the style.
