Named after the Dorset Horn ram that lived in the brewery stables in Wandsworth, and on which the Young’s trademark is based – a proven symbol of Young’s brewing heritage and a firm favourite with drinkers for over 30 years.
Ram Rod is a 100% malt brew with Maris Otter and Crystal malt and Fuggle and Golding hops.

275ml bottle served chilled at the excellent Calthorpe Arms, Holborn. Inviting amber body with good amount of white foam and brilliant clarity. Hoppy to the nose. Flavour of caramel malts offset by a fruity touch. Dry bitter end. Foamy mouthfeel (03.02.2007).

Half pint served at ambient temperature at the The Lamb, a quality Youngs pub in Bloomsbury (14.09.2006). Spicy aroma. Clear dark brown coloured. Missing head. Flavour of caramel sweetness and a marked touch of sallow. Dry ending.

Clear copper color with thin off white head. Malty-slightly bready aroma. Similar taste with pale malts, sweeter caramel malts, a slight hint of chocolate malts and a slim amount of hop bitterness. Pretty standard tasting. Not too noteworthy.

Pour is a tea colored brown with a white head. Aroma is hard to detect but there are some malts there. Flavor is better than the aroma. Sweet dark fruit with a touch of roasted malts followed with a nutty aftertaste. Still this is about as middle of the road as you can get.

Medium, creamy, white head with larger bubbles. Clear brown body. Faint nutty aroma. Sweet, nutty taste with resiny, citrusy hop notes. Soft, dry aftertaste with notes of resin and pine needles. Quite drinkable, but nothing special.

Cask handpull at Pillars of Hercules, Soho. Dark copper colour, no head, hop and dusty malt aroma. Hops are quite herby. Don’t like the yeast on this but it had quite a spicey finish and a bit of alcohol burn 535310 2.6/5.0 Re-rate 27 Oct 2010 JDW Sam Peto, Folkestone. Brown gold colour with lasting beige head. Some Young’s yeast on aroma, but actually quite bitter. Plenty of EKG present. Plenty of EKG on aroma. Lovely condition. Lve the hop aroma, really beautiful hop. I love it. Real biting English style IPA English EKG hop all overy it. I burped EKG hop!!

Not bad, as an ordinary bitter. Mild persimmony fruitiness is mostly apparent in the nose, less so on the palate. A hint of herbal hoppiness. Malts are firm, sweetish. There’s a bit of a tang that I also noticed even moreso in a bottle of the Special London Ale purchased at the same time - and these were brand new, in the sense of having just arrived from the distributor. Whatever the source, the twangy tanginess definitely detracted from drinkability. Decently attractive light shade of amber, thin head.

Pale copper, lots of CO2. #Lliving" off-white head with big bubbles, mostly diminishing. Dry woody hoppy aroma. Quite hoppy flavor with notes of sugar. Too heavily carbonated mouthfeel. Short bitter aftertaste with toffee notes.
