It's been a few decades since a Colossal Claude sighting has been reported, but we're fairly certain the massive sea monster has been laying low off the coast of his favorite brewery. Word has it that after years of terrifying sailors and feasting on salmon he acquired a taste for hops. So we brewed this Imperial IPA with a colossal dose of Cascade, Chinook, Citro and Strata hops in hope of coaxing Claude out to join us for a pint.

Can, 0.355l. Aroma of mango, passion fruit, flowers, pine and biscuit. Pours cloudy dark golden color with medium sized soapy off-white head, nice lacing and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts overripe tropical fruity, citrusy and resinous, following is moderate sweet malty, piney and medicinal, mouthfeel is smooth and mild spicy, while finish is pretty bitter. Medium body, oily texture and average carbonation in palate. Hops ness…

Can via Beer Republic. Med-thin body, med-high carbonation. High bitterness, med-light sweetness. Moderate alcoholic warmth, slightly burning too, apparently not made to be a subtle beer this one. Light caramelly maltiness, obligatory at this strength, but mostly focused on hops. Classic west coast character, citrusy, resiny, a bit piney. Overall pretty nice even if not the most drinkable.

355ml can from Abeervinum, Rimini, Italy. Pours intense blonde, fairly transparent, with a nicer head of persistent white foam, fine. Aroma is intensely piney and resinous, citrus. Body and carbonation are average. Taste is nicely bitter, even in the final, which is fairly long.

Can from 2021. Darkly hazy gold beer, under a very thick head. Orangey and piney hop in the nose. The taste has more alcohol than it might when it was fresher, because the hops have started to fade a bit. A definite orange juice taste from the hop bill, then a bit of bitter aftertaste in the back of the palate.

On tap at St. Augustine's, pours a hazy copper golden with a small white head. Aroma doesn't smell especially fresh, with earthy hops, some resins, light pine, and caramel bready malt. Flavour confirms my non-fresh suspicions, with washed out earthy hops, some resins, and lightly sweet bready malt. Reasonably balanced and constructed. Nice one, St Aug's, putting these old keg on. Suboptimal.

Can. Hazy amber beer with a cream head. Summer fruit and light malt aroma. Grapefruit and malt flavor with light earth. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Grapefruit and earth linger with malt and light pine.
