Can from Beerdome. Aroma is strong coffee, espresso, roasted malt, mocha, chocolate, alcohol. Sweet flavour with a bittersweet and mild boozy finish. Body is full and a bit sticky, carbonation is low. Sweet and strong, coffee aroma checks out, pretty good.

Creamy lightbrown good mostly lasting head. Black colour. Moderate malty and light hoppy aroma. Cabbage notes. Moderate bitter flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate.

Very strong coffee stout by this brewery in Groede, located at the coast in Zeeland in the southwestern Netherlands – a beautiful region I am quite familiar with. Can obtained by my girlfriend at the brewery during a visit to Groede. Creamy, yellow beige, tiny-bubbled, opening and eventually (under influence of the alcohol) completely dissolving head, black robe with only very thin misty burgundy edge under bright light. Aroma of indeed clear coffee, cappuccino, strong liquorice, caramel, ‘drop’, Ersatz chocolate, brown rum, blood, damp earth, whisky and coke, hints of beef stock, wet dog and rubber. Sweet onset, candied dates and overripe medlar, fine but actively tingling fizz, very light beef stock-like umami note – all overpowered by a strong liquorice-like flavour; full, oily body, deeply caramelly, molasses, something ‘Koetjesreep’-like too, surrounded by a blood-like natural iron factor. Clear cappuccino-like coffee presence in the finish, along with a herbal hop bitter accent and lots of rum-like booze, ending up a bit astringent on the root of the tongue – though admittedly this could have been worse at this ABV. Earthy-yeasty aspect and, again, liquorice eventually overtake the coffee effect, strangely; I am not saying this beer needs more coffee, but it does need a more clean and chocolatey character for what it intends to be. Apart from trying to impress consumers, I fail to find a reason why this stout needed to be 13% ABV – it would have worked equally good, or perhaps even better, at 8-10%; that said and in spite of some structural errors, not a bad end result, in the context of Dutch Bargain’s general output.
