Prior to 2010, Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin was released in such limited quantities that it was available only at the North Coast Brewing retail shop in Fort Bragg, California. However, we received so many requests for this beer that we began producing enough Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin to put into broader, but still limited, distribution.
Barrel-Aged Old Rasputin uses Roman and Mayan numerals to indicate the release number.
Brewmaster’s Tasting Notes, Rye Whiskey Barrel Expression
The color of the beer is black, allowing nothing through as it is held up to the light. A generous brown layer of foam erupts upon pouring, covering the surface of the beer. As it is raised to the nose, a dusty, leathery character reminiscent of tobacco leaf accompanies the aromas of roasted grains, chocolate, and vanilla. The beer itself has a dry feel from the wood tannins of the oak barrel and is accentuated by the warm dryness of ethanol. Oak character is present in the flavor, but bittersweet chocolate nuanced with vanilla is the dominant tone. In the middle, one can perceive nuttiness, spicy rye grain notes, and licorice.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown to black with a small beige head. Rye whiskey aromas with light chocolate, coffee and prune notes. More of the same on the palate with peppery rye, prune and warming whiskey notes. A bit thin on the palate, from a texture standpoint, but good barrel character. Some light smoky character towards the end as it warms with lingering pepper and warming alcohol.
