12T-bottle-white-bgIt’s exciting to see the evolution of Irish reds in the craft beer scene, the way Irish micro breweries are (slowly) retaking ownership of a style that has too often and too long been looked down upon. In the past, Irish reds were associated with blandness but no more! Now, the flavour spectrum can vary from fruity to roast and everything inbetween, a literal liquid reflection of the brewer’s imagination.
We wanted to produce an Irish Red that would sit comfortably as a session beer, smooth and flavoursome where the malt just surpasses the hops in flavour but leaves both to noticeably tingle on the taste buds.

Bottle from Lidl, Carrick-on-Shannon [190318]

Dark amber, very murky, frothy white head dissipates, light lacing, far too much yeast sediment
Aroma - Soft fruity caramel malts, some earthy roast
Taste of caramel malts, dab of toffee. some twiggy hops, not much else
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, light sweet. Finish has some light roast.
Overall - Says it's unfined / unpasteurised / unfiltered on the label - taste is just OK, poor appearance, rather rough hewn

50cl bottle from Tesco. Pours a very murky brown. Initial flavours are a big hit of tobacco which is followed by a sour blackberry flavour. A strange mix. It is quite refreshing with a surprisingly lively carbonation. Definitely a grower but doesn’t really work overall.
