Working with our friends at Intelligentsia, we flew down to Guatemala to source some of the world's best coffee to use as we release the first-ever Coffee Barleywine. The beer is an English-style Barleywine, meaning malt forward, and aged in 4+ year old Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels before adding La Soledad coffee beans right before packaging to retain a bold coffee aroma and flavor.

2018 bottle drunk 6/10 and 6/12/21.
Clear ruby-tinted mahogany. Tan head fades pretty quickly to nothing.
Extremely fruity with light chocolate and caramel to intensify things. Coffee is light, a bit burnt/dark while it's pretty free of alcohol (relatively speaking). Just waves of honey, caramel and vanilla lingering nicely.
Sweet, rich, soft, luxurious. Typical Bourbon County beer with low alcohol and a good balance despite the sweetness. Coffee is light, just adding a mild dark roast note while heavy fruitiness and milk chocolate surge forth. Low, but ample carbonation and no oxidation or flaw noted. Good, maybe not quite as complex as some of the stouts.

Bottle (2018 vintage) courtesy of AirForceHops in bottle share--thanks, Chris! Appearance is clear, dark brown (like cola) with no sparkle, no head. Aroma is gentle coffee and dark fruit over bourbon and caramel. Taste is strong, pleasant bourbon dominant over coffee, dark fruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth texture, soft carbonation, nice heat in back of the throat and esophagus, and finish as taste. Overall, like the strength of the bourbon but, while the coffee is still present, it probably is not what it was in its heyday. I liked it.

Bottle. Trade. Pours dark amber with a small fading head with only bubbles slightly appearing. Deep, very deep woody malty nose. Bourbon, toffee, vanilla, caramel, good coffee and licorice. Like a finer kahlua. Slick and superbly soft and low carbonated. Vinous flavor that stays forever. Yeah, what a treat!

Bottle thanks to Russell. Pours a dark amber with small beige head that lasts. The aroma is strong roast, candi sugar, bourbon, wood. Slick body, caramel, roast, bourbon, nice sweetness, very good.

500 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/27/2018. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby red/brown color with a small fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with poor retention, that reduces to nothing pretty quickly. No lacing on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, toffee, honey, medium roast coffee, vanilla, cream, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, roasted nuts, and brown bread; with lighter notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, fig, date, cherry, apricot, red apple, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warmed, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malts, coffee, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of huge caramel, brown sugar, toffee, honey, medium roast coffee, vanilla, cream, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, roasted nuts, and brown bread; with lighter notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, fig, date, cherry, apricot, red apple, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Mild herbal, grassy, roasted coffee bitterness; and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toffee, honey, medium roast coffee, vanilla, cream, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, roasted nuts, brown bread, milk chocolate, cocoa, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, cherry, apricot, red apple, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts, coffee, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; with a solid malt/roast/bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mildly increasing warmth of 15.1%, with minimal barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an amazing English barelywine! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malts, coffee, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Perfectly balanced rich malts, fruity/nutty coffee complexity, and bourbon barrel presence/integration; with restrained fruity yeast and balancing earthy hops against sweetness. Not overly boozy/tannic. A highly enjoyable offering, and amazing style example as expected. Just as impressive as the base beer, but less fruity and more rich on the malt/coffee flavors.
