Rustbucket, our trademark Rye Ale, now has a big brother, Black Bucket. This Black Rye IPA balances rye and roasted malts with fresh hop aromas and flavours. At 6.5% ABV Blackie is a little bigger in strength than his lighter sibling but we think he is every bit as drinkable.

Dark brown colour, good beige head and lace. Licorice, toasted malts, pine hops in the nose. Medium-bodied. Roasted, piney, even a bit sweetish fruity. Piney bitterish finish. Soft palate. Nice rye-CDA.

From the can. Dark, dark brown with a creamy beige head that lingers. Aroma is pine, citrus, melon, dark chocolate. Quite nice. Taste is bittersweet up with the dark chocolate taking the upper hand. A piney bitterness soon follows and rounds out the finish. Body is medium, quite oily, carbonation is soft. A fairly traditional BIPA but a solid one.

Brewdog Shoreditch. Keg. Almost clear dark amber - brown beer, small pale tan head. Thin palate, semi dry and with reasonable minerally carbonation. Thin dark malts still carry a fair whack of roasty bitterness. Bitter floral hops, tastes like UK hops in the boil. Modest fruity hop underneath, definitely the underdawg here! Whispers of pine, dark chocolate and red berries before a light semi dry finish. Long bitterish linger. Nice enough but needs a more solid malt base to hang its hat on.

Still plenty of bitterness — also because of the roasted malt — but less straightforward hoppiness.

Bottle. Brown color with beige head. Aroma is spruces, spicy ryespice, a bit farty, chocolate. Taste is the same. Oily mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Not bad!
