Hefty tripel in this 'Barbe' series by oldtimer Verhaeghe, one of the last traditional 'oud bruin' producers in Flanders but venturing in other styles with this series. Vichy bottle from Bontinck in Zele. Thick and dense, plaster-like lacing, egg-white, foamy, stable head, completely clear (filtered!) warm 'old golden' robe with some visible sparkling. Aroma of soggy old bread, banana peel, cooked turnip, damp straw, old potatoes, added iron (confirmed by the flawless 'hand test'), coriander seed, old dried orange peel, clove, withering parsley, ripe pear, honey, cooked spinach, something sulfuric and a background hint of rancid butter (isovaleric acid I presume). Sweetish, fruity onset, hints of banana and ripe pear with a dash of pineapple, lively carbonation, full and smooth body; a thick layer of residual honeyish sweetness is draped over a cereally, ever so slightly caramelly malt middle with obvious metallic edges. Fruity aspects of banana and pear (or sweet apple) linger about, some clove-like phenols set in and a slight coriander accent is added before the end; finishes sweet and honeyish, with impressions of cooked yellow fruit, leftover dough and some caramel, while hops remain sadly understated, adding not much more than a faint dash of floral bitterishness. Needless to say at this strength and for this type of beer, a warming afterglow of cheap 'appeljenever'-like alcohol ensues, becoming rather astringent and annoyingly dominant in the end. I have not been very impressed by this Barbe series before but this one even puts me off: boozy, overly sweet, unbalanced and downright badly structured tripel (or edelbier, if you prefer to avoid the tripel moniker here) with some off-flavours, falling well below the average level of quality of the gazillions of tripels brewed in Belgium nowadays. As much sympathy as I have for Verhaeghe's historical background and commitment to their local oud bruin, this is a real failure, an unnecessary beer badly executed - I even had trouble finishing it, which says a lot in my case. Less sugar, less iron, less alcohol and more hops, and then this beer may be this Barbe X can still be saved, who knows... Lots of work afoot here, if you ask me!

Bottle at home. Golden color, beige head. Aroma and flavor are malts, sweet-tart-bitter, an odd fruitpeel-hint, blueberries, sweet-bitter hints. Very odd, yet interesting. Decent body and carbonation. 7-7-7-7-7,5
