The Rev. James Original is rich and well-balanced with a mellow malty flavour that unexpectedly gives way to a clean, refreshing finish.

The Rev. James ales are based on an original recipe from 1885, and named in honour of brewing legend the Rev. James Buckley, saver of souls and satisfier of thirsts.

Brewed with our exclusive Buckleys yeast, they each deliver a signature taste with a surprising finish.

Small coarseish beige head. Clear brown body. Light earthy caramel and dried fruit aroma with wooden notes. Sweet-dryish earthy strawy caramel taste with roasty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, smooth, flat mouthfeel. Dryish resiny wooden caramel aftertaste with earthy dusty strawy notes. Long lingering roasty fruity nutty notes. Drinkable, complex, and subtle. Very good. (0.568l cask at The Green Man, Paddington, London.)

Flaske 0,5l fra Kilpishalli. Drukket i Skibotn 14 Apr 14. Mørkebrun med litt rødskjær. Lavt luftig skum med litt lacing. God maltaroma. Frisk krydderaktig smak med innslag av mais. Litt tynn. Avslutninga er svakt fruktig & litt tørr.

500ml bottle by the courtesy of Finn. Shared with Richard at an Easter gathering. Deep amber coloured body, creamy off-white head, slowly diminishing. Semi-sweet malt-fruity aroma. Caramel malts dominating the flavour profile added by dried fruits. Moderate bittersweet tail. Medium bodied. Quite tasty beer (Tromsø 18.04.2014).

Cask @ The Cannon, Newport Pagnell. Mahogany; dark but clear with a compact head. Aroma not up to much: faint spruce and Malteasers. Taste is sweet with an overlaid smokiness. Bitter aftertaste. It is ok, but not one of Brain’s successes.

Bottle from Morrisons drank at home. Brown beer clear lasting beige head. It’s a best bitter with some malt. Not much hop. It’s clean inoffensive, lacks a bit of character but it’s a malty best bitter. ok

[26/10/13; 1st rating] Bottle Dad shared with me- cheers! Deep amber with a large cream head. Smooth, almost slimy in the mouth with a prickly fizz. Caramel, caramel and more caramel with a dry finish. Boring. 5/4/5/2/10. [6/12/14; 2nd rating] Bottle Dad shared with me- cheers! Deep amber with a large cream head. Fruity up front. Lots of caramel and butterscotch. Bit of dusty oak to balance. Quite liking it this time - going to have to up my rating. 6/4/7/3/13. Score is the average of all rates.

Bottle. Brown colour with minimal and quickly diminishing off-white head. Aroma is light malty with notes of wood. Flavor is earthy, notes of malts and light caramel. Slightly bittery final with short duration and a little bit watery.
