This Altbier is brewed in the traditional German old or ""alt"" style. Full bodied with a malty richness and deep copper color derived from Victory malt, roasted barley & carries a delicate hop aroma. Before lager beer was made (1830’s) in Germany, the style was Obergöriger Lageredbier, which means "" top-fermented lagered beer"". When Western Europe embraced the lager yeast in the middle of the 19th century, Düsseldorf decided to keep brewing their top-fermented beer. Altbier is thus an ale that is aged (lagered) like a lager. Altbier offers a smooth, rounded alternative to sharp, bitter Pilsners.

Draft at Squatters. Dark brown with a skin of beige head. Nutty, roasted aroma. Taste is mildly sweet, more nutty flavors with a small bitter bite at the back.

Bottle @ Crooked Stave Reserve Society meeting, thanks to Scott for sharing. Pours a clear, dark orangish brown appearance with a light brown head. Caramel, toasted malt, some nuts, and a touch of cardboard in the nose. Carbonation is a bit low. A little doughy. Caramel, light citrus, grassy flavor. Ehhh, not that great.
