2016-11-08, bottle, 7 years old, 7-4-7-3-13=34
It’s getting quite earthy, the alcohol is prominent, moderately roasty, moderately chocolatey, rum-like final. It’s not better nor worse than years ago, it’s ok.

The color is blackest, with a brown medium sized head, short lived; fizzy. Aroma of coffee, cream, toffee, light whisky cream, wet cardboard; later, alcohol. The carbonation is very high; the body is much less strong than expected; the alcohol punch is immediate, burning the tongue almost, thinning the body; flavor of chocolate and coffee, but soulless. Too much alcohol in the end, very boozy. Nothing, compared to the Third Edition I just had.

/12/10/12//12

Bottle @ ISKTR

Pours pitch black with no head. Aroma has hints of licorice. Taste is quite raw and has hints of roastiness. Alcohol burns through a bit too much.

Pours a solid black with a minimal tan head that disappears quickly. Smells of chocolate, roasted grains and alcohol. Tastes like alcohol with roasted grains in there for fun. This is definitely a sipping beer! Body is Medium, mouthfeel is oily/creamy with an alcohol burn, carbonation is low. I really enjoyed sipping on this one for most of the night. The alcohol is really hot right now, I’ll have to revisit this one in a year or two.

(Bottle) Opaque black colour with frothy, brown head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of tar, liquorice, burnt wood, ashes, dark rye bread, coffee, soy sauce, molasses, asphalt and even a peppery hint of black pudding. Fairly vinous. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, strong black coffee, burnt sugar, liquorice, salmiak, soy sauce, hints of orange peel and a tarry, roasted finish with a fiery touch of alcohol coming through in the end. Bitterness is initially overshadowed by the heavy, roasted malt but a generous coffee bitterness lingers at the back of the tongue. Full body, fairly sweet. This is seriously heavy stuff ... and quite impressive. Excellent beer.

Sample at the 3rd Annual Coldest Day of the Year Stout Tasting on 01/22/2011: Pours viscous black with a thin tan head that burns away quickly. Short stringy lacing. Aroma of roasted nuts, molasses and acetone. Thick and chewy body with flavors of dark fruit, roasted malt, nuts and tobacco. The finish is a slow burn of alcohol and dark fruit. Good beer that is a sipper to be sure.

50cl Bottle at The Good, The Bad & The Ugly tasting, thanks for getting this on the table skortila! Black colour, brown head. Aroma is sweet, milky, hard roasted malts, alcohol. Flavour is ash, hard roasted malts, milk, coffee, alcohol, hard roasted bitter alcoholic finish. Medium bodied. A bit too much imo.

500 ml bottle. Black body with a thin but dense brown head. Strong aroma of heavy malt, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, liquorices, dry fruit and alcohol. Flavor is sweet, roasted malt, coffee, dry fruit, sherry, chocolate, molasses and warming alcohol. Sweet, and bitter finish with moderate roast and alcohol. Full body. It’s only natural to compare this one with first edition that was a mind-blowing experience for me. I have been following the second edition all the way and all the time felt that this is a rawer and less matured version. At this stage it’s two years from release date and time for me to compare it side by side with first edition. I just have to realize that this is two different beers, I prefer the first one since I find it more balanced and smoother. The more raw feeling in second edition becomes more obvious when comparing them, but I thing this has something to do with the hops and coffee style. The flavor is just different and more outstanding; this is a very balanced beer as well, but with more distinct flavors. I don’t believe the DH2 will ever taste similar to DH1, I think it’s on top right now. It’s a very nice beer, but not as smooth as DH1.
