Bottle thanks to Suttree. Shared with ilovedarkbeer. Agreed with daknole, not even close to the Baltic Porter. Pours a very dark brown, with a light brown head that gives a good lacing. Very flowery aroma with chocolate and some dark fruits, apple and papaya as well. Taste is fruit with lots of coffee, a bit bitter and metallic. Light carbonation.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish light brown head - fairly clear, only slightly opaque. Aroma of roasted malt, brewed drip coffee, faint milk chocolate and a bit of lactic milk scents. Medium-bodied; Strong roasty malt flavour with some sweetness and tons of nuts. Aftertaste shows more body, malt, coffee and a bit of sweetness. Overall, a good porter - definitely worth trying if you can find it! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Durham, North Carolina on 31-August-2008, sampled on 13-September-2008.

Appearance: Pours a deep, dark color with a reddish tinge. A tan one-finger head makes a brief appearance before fading to a thin, milky film on the beer’s surface. 3.0/5.0

Aroma: There is a definite roasted malt character which is common with this style. Sweet coffee seems to dominate any other aromas. Very pleasant but very straightforward. 3.5/5.0

Taste: The roasted malt/coffee character continues to the taste as well, though not as sweetly. There is a fruitiness and a subtle smokiness here as well. I also get faint notes of hop bitterness, caramel, Cheerios (no kidding) and tea. 4.0/5.0

Mouthfeel: This beer feels very rich and creamy, but at the same time goes down very easily. It’s an interesting combination. At 5.7% ABV, this one will leave you standing, even if it goes down a bit too fast. 4.5/5.0

Drinkability: Smooth, tasty pleasant, easy going. What’s not to like? 4.5/5.0

Overall: "The Dark Beer Specialist" might sound a little scary, but all they really mean is that they’re not afraid of flavor. While this beer is definitely not light on flavor or body, it is highly approachable and a good example of the style. It doesn’t look pretty, but it drinks very nicely. 3.94/5.0

Bottle. Sweet backbone rounds out a nicely balanced porter. Inviting appearance with large, tan head atop a dark brown body. Aroma is sweet with toffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic and lightly to moderately bitter. Sweet finish. Medium body with lively carbonation so much carbonation, in fact, that flavors are muted by it. Watery texture. Nice porter.

12 oz. bottle from Suttree. Pour is all black, with a big (3 inch) khaki head. Head was quite lasting. Aroma of roast chocolate malt. Taste is more of the roasty chocolate goodness. There is a nice element of earthiness to this one as well. Nice full body rounds this out nicely. Very well done Porter, thanks for this one Phil!

Courtesy (again) of Gillard, thanks buddy. Pours a deep amber with thin tan head. The aroma comes across as pretty sweet for a Porter. It is sweet as well as roasty at the same time with mild burnt maltiness. The flavor starts sweet and roasty. I get lighter roasted malts before the burnt malt flavors enter toward the finish. The malt after taste holds a mostly burnt maltiness. Flavorful Porter but a little light on the burnt malts I come to expect from the style. Yum. The after taste goes for a while and really makes this beer work for me.

Aroma is chocolate, raisins, apple, and cinnamon. Black, with a thick, long lasting tan head. Alcohol is noticeable, but that could just be me. My last beer tasted very alcoholic too despite a relatively low ABV. Unusually thin bodied for a porter. Mainly apple core flavored. Perhaps some coffee notes, but that’s a bit of a stretch. Very subdued coffee and hop finish, woodier as it warms. Note: My ratings for the next few weeks are probably going to be out of whack since I have quit smoking.

This beer came to me in my beer club. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black color with a very large dark brown head. The aroma was dry, roasty and had a hint of floral hops. The flavor was dry, very roasty and malty with a hint of smoke and expresso and moderate floral hops. The finish was long and dry. The mouthfeel was almost gritty.

Pour is a jet black with a average tan head. Aroma is a nice mix of chocolate and roasted malts. Flavor is decent with some milk chocolate and a roasted oat. Leaves a woody after taste on the tounge. Pretty decent attempt.
