Big Sky Brewing's Ivan the terrible Imperial Stout is brewed according to the traditional style using English hops and the finest American malt. It's aroma and flavor balance well between esters of dried fruit and roasted cocoa with a slight bourbon presence.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with light lactose and deep creamy black chocolate note is pretty much perfect. Light bourbon and vanilla notes are also perceptible. Taste is pretty much a perfect mix between some bourbon with creamy black chocolate notes, light lactose and light dry roasted malt notes. Body is full with perfect nice creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Wow, what a surprise this one was with perfect balance and not too much barrel-aging.

Fresh, definitely bourbon forward and "hot" with the alcohol but it's malty as all hell and has a noticeable dark fruit and cocoa presence. --- Beer merged from original tick of Barrel Aged Ivan the Terrible (2012) on 06 Oct 2016 at 18:32 - Score: 8. Original review text: Thinner body than the BCBS. Some oxidation. Bourbon is dulled, Malt seems to be healthy. Not fair to compare it, really.

Tap. Pours opaque deep brown to black with a medium brown head that dissipates with great lacing. Aroma is coffee, dark roasted malts, dark chocolate and a touch of bourbon. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter with notes of vanilla. Flavor profile is fairly muted for this class of beer. Full bodied, creamy and rich in the mouth.

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. 2010 vintage. Bottle 3339/3800. Pours dark brown color with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and chocolate. Subtle bourbon flavor with roasted malts, sweet caramel and vanilla, chocolate and some oak. Full body with pretty high carbonation for an impy stout. Very nice. I’ve been impressed with their barrel program, this and the Olde Bluehair have been very enjoyable. Thanks Craig.
