Big Sky Brewing's Ivan the terrible Imperial Stout is brewed according to the traditional style using English hops and the finest American malt. It's aroma and flavor balance well between esters of dried fruit and roasted cocoa with a slight bourbon presence.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours brn/blk with a dark tan head. Smeels like dark fruit and chocolate. Med body. Flavor matches aroma with a little dark malt. It’s surprisingly dry. Clean bitter finish. Maybe ending with a hint of bourbon. Good stuff. --- Beer merged from original tick of Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel on 02 Feb 2009 at 19:48 - Score: Appearance - 10 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8.5. Original review text: Bottle from Liquor Max. Very dark brown color with a strong dark tan head. Aromas of treacle, coffee and very toasted malt. Near full bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor is very strong treacle/coffee/malt and may have some anise. Yes, it does have anise. Finishes in a heavenly manner. The initial heat touch diminishes. Seems rather alcoholic, or at least more than 8.7. Finish is very satisfying.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/25/2014. Pours pitch black color with a 1 finger dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, brown sugar, raisin, prune, licorice, dark bread, light char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, fruity yeast ester, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, brown sugar, light dark fruit, light licorice, light char, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Moderate amount of roast/earthy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, brown sugar, light dark fruit, light char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, earthy hops, and light fruity yeast ester flavors; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly bready/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice imperial stout. All around great complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt, earthy hops, and light fruity yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering. --- Beer merged from original tick of Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel on 31 May 2019 at 20:48 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 9 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8.5. Original review text: 8500th review! 750 ml bottle into snifter, 2015 vintage. Bottle #2566/3000. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, oak char, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, peppercorn, pine, and yeast/roast/toast/oak earthiness. Slight booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/black/roast/bready malts, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, oak char, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, peppercorn, pine, and yeast/roast/toast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate pine, herbal, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness; and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, oak char, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, dark bread/crust, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, peppercorn, pine, and yeast/roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/bready, and fairly sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is great. Mild increasing warmth of 11.9%, with minimal lingering barrel booze after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barrel aged Russian imperial stout. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/black/roast/bready malts, bourbon barrels, and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, with the mellowly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Fantastic balance between rich malt complexity and bourbon barrel presence/integration; with balancing earthy hops and restrained fruity yeast. Light residual sweetness with lingering bitter/tannic dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and spot on style example. A lot more charred/tannic barrel presence than I expected, but it doesn't get overly boozy/drying.

Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a rainy day starting the short Thanksgiving week. Appearance is a thick pitch black with a thin off white head. Aroma is rich in dark chocolate and licorice, along with a potent backing. Taste has a light burn, notes of lactose, licorice, espresso, chocolate. It’s good stuff, nothing mind blowing, but solid.

12oz bottle. Really nice Imperial Stout. Creamy, vanilla, cocoa tones. Big chocolate tones. Not overwhelming, not a barrel or booze bomb. Nice. Touch of ash, tobacco. Sweet. Drinkable. Bottle @ home, picked up at Supermarket Liquor Fort Collins. Pours a black appearance with a lasting brown head. Anise, plums, figs, dark chocolate, oak, candy sugar, and some herbal notes in the aroma. Medium body, creamy mouth feel. Pretty intense herbal and earthy hops in the mouth. Moderate high bitterness and moderate sweetness. A little strong on the booze. Plenty of chocolate, roast, and raisins in the flavor. Fine but not exceptional. I used to really enjoy the barrel-aged version but I’m starting to question my rating based on this non-barrel-aged version. --- Beer merged from original tick of Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel on 06 Aug 2011 at 16:42 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 10 | Flavor - 10 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 9. Original review text: Bottle @ Brouwers. Deep black appearance with a light brown head. Very nice, amazing bourbon, sweet oaky, light vanilla, roasty chocolate malty aroma. Amazing chocolate malty, sweet chocolate toffee, dark chocolate bourbon, light vanilla flavor. I’m really surprised that the Jim Beam barrels complement this so well.

12oz bottle pours out black topped with a small tan head. Nose is roast malts chocolate a little coffee and some molasses sweetness. Taste is more of the roast malts cocoa and a good bitterness on the end. Pretty tasty. I can’t wait till I do a side by side with the barrel aged Ivan. --- Beer merged from original tick of Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel on 01 Jan 2009 at 17:54 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 7.5. Some cherry and wood. Plenty of molasses also. A tasty brew.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle, 2012 vintage. Aroma is moderately chocolate forward with some nice roast character. Some light bourbon and oak notes. Medium light fruit esters with a hint of anise. Light alcohol spice. Pours black with a moderately thick, dark tan/light mocha head of average size and retention. Medium light lacing and moderate legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with some moderate chocolate and roast notes. Light tobacco and ash character with hints of leather. Lighter dark fruit esters and anise than in the flavor. Moderate bitterness with light oak and alcohol notes. Hints of bourbon. Mouthfeel is medium to medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright imperial stout, but its a bit thin. Aroma is a bit fruity, but flavor is pretty nicely integrated. Light oxidation and not as much bourbon character as I was expecting.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you KingCecil! Pours black with a rather small fizzy mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving much trace on the glass. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with roasted malts, charred wood, oatmeal cookies, bitter chocolate, bourbon, vanilla fudge, pecan nuts, alcohol, coffee hard candy, toffee, sherry and hints of schwarzwald cake and burnt sugar. Taste is slightly sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, charred wood, sweet dark bread, bourbon, vanilla fudge, bitter chocolate, black pepper corns, sweet liquorice candy, sherry, mineral rich soil, St Johns wort, and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is round, tiny boozy, tiny roasted astringent and medium to full bodied. finish is bitter with roasted malts, bitter chocoalte, dark roast coffee, vanilla fudge, bourbon, mineral rich soil, biscuits, black pepper corns, alcohol and sherry. Balanced, "simple" and smart. Subtle barrel aging really suits the beer. Great stuff! --- Beer merged from original tick of Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout - Bourbon Barrel on 19 Nov 2013 at 14:06
