This tawny-orange ale immediately assults the senses with the character of hops from the Pacific Northwest. An aroma that combines grapefruit pith and pine resin foreshadows a strongly bitter beer. The flavor is spicy and juicy with citrus dominating over honey and floral notes, then giving way to a dry, chalky bitterness. The almost sweet finish is accentuated by the strength of the alcohol.

Sample at the House Wine EPIC beer tasting on 04/18/2012: This beer pours a hazy deep copper-orange color with a medium creamy white head that diminishes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. The aroma consists of hops, citrus and malt. Medium to full body with flavors of resiny hops, citrus and sweet malt. The finish is hoppy with a lingering grapefruit aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Tap @ Avery, doing the 10th Annual Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours slightly hazy golden with white head. Aroma of malty, peach, tropica fruit, grapefruit. Taste is malty, tropical fruit, peach, pine, grapefruit, pine. Medium body, average carbonation, slightly bitter finish. 090312

On tap at ColLAboration. Pours with a hazed golden body with a small white head that slowly fades but leaves good lace. Aromas are of pine, resin, grapefruit, weed, strawberry, estery and very grassy. Flavors are a bit boozy with some perceived sweetness that seems to be more alcohol than crystal malt. Boozy, but very fresh hop flavor. A bit husky, spicy, herbaceous. Really bitter with a ton of grassy character. Warming, spritzy with a fruity and bitter finish.

Bottle release #13. Very nice imperial first thing I thought was coming from Utah? This will be weak and unimpressive. Not the case at all. Beautiful beer

22 oz. bottle, pours a hazy golden orange with a medium white head. Aroma of caramel malts, resinous and piney hops, butter - the pine stands out with a thick malt backing. Flavour of intense resinous and piney hops, grapefruit, rich caramel malts to balance with a bit of orange zest. Remarkably complex for a IIPA. Well-crafted and immensely enjoyable.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 9/5/11, Release #5
Aroma: The nose is orange, grapefruit, grass, and a subtle pine/resin component
Appearance: The pour is a cloudy orange color with small white head and good lacing
Flavor: The taste is balanced, medium sweet, citrusy, with a medium bitterness to it as well
Palate: The mouthfeel is slightly sticky, with a medium (leaning full) body, and a fairly dry finish
Overall Impression: Overall, I found this to be a decent DIPA. In this style, I would prefer that the pine/resin be a touch more prominent, but it was there. I would still say that this was a solid beer though, just not a top notch example of this style.

Release #3 22 ounce bottle from Total Wine Chesapeake, VA, opened 7/18/11. Pours a hazy amber with a large creamy offwhite head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of earthy, leafy hops and caramel. The taste is bitter slightly resiny slightly piney hops with a tropical citrus finish. Plenty of malts in the background. Medium-full bodied.

22oz bottle-shared by jtclockwork–pours a rich off white head and hazy gold color. Aroma is lemon/pine, some light malt. Taste is sweet lemon/pine/spice hops, secondary light/medium malt. Finishes with the hops getting some bite and drying.

Bottle. Pours apricot. Off white head. Nose and taste of citrus, hops, caramel malt and apple skin. Medium body - a bit thin for an imperial. Moderate bitterness in finish.

Release #2 ABV: 10.1% Orange peel and pine aroma. Clear amber, noticeable lack of carbonation, medium yellow lacing head. Chewy with a little heat on the back. Honey, orange, and pine flavor in generous amounts. Lesser barley malt notes. Orange peel finish. Resinous and very bitter. Kind of over the top and certainly not for a novice. Fans of the style probably love it.
