Double IPA #3 is a 9% ABV Black IPA made with the classic “C” hops (Cascade, Centennial and Columbus) with lots of Amarillo in the dry hop. English barley malts and midnight wheat create a velvety smooth base on which these hops shine.

Draft: Tar, charred oak, grapefruit nose. Black, thin tan head, good lacing. Burned rye bread, caraway. Full body, moderate carbonation. Interesting. Not as Cascadian which normally gets down rated by me for this style, but this was neat in its own way.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/29/2016. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense an rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, lemon/orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/grassy/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of bright/juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pine, chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, and floral/grassy/roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind and light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, pineapple, peach, apricot, lemon/orange rind, pine, chocolate, cocoa, toasted dark bread, and floral/grassy/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of bright/juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate roast/bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass; leading to a bit of lingering hop astringency, but not overwhelming. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous, creamy/bready, and slightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is an outstanding black DIPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of bright/juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, even with the strong increasing bitter/resinous finish. Very vibrant on hops, with nice backing malts that aren’t overdone or too roasty. A highly enjoyable offering.

Sampled from bottle at the special Weyerbacher tasting in Getränke Oase. Raw onionny hops, almost hop purely pellets. Black, brown shine, low brown head. Mellow, metallic dry. Grassy, metallic hops, a bit raw sticky hop finish.

Bottle. Brown color with tan head. Aroma is pure hop pellets, slightly spicy, lots of cat piss, some chocolate. Taste is spicy, more hop pellets, dark malt, dry and bitter bready finish. Medium carbonation. Weird.
