The checkered battlefield is sparse. The last remaining pieces are preparing for the decisive battle. Every piece is a giant, every thought counts and every move is crucial.

This barleywine is like a chess endgame – a few different malts and hops, but the way they are put together and what role they play is more important than ever. The fresh hops grown in Estonia are the pawn that turned into a queen in the endgame.

Pours dark amber with a thin head that almost immediately fades away. Aroma is very malty with loads of caramel and toffee. Hints of apple. Taste is sweet, driven by the caramel base and lots of krokant, but with a light sourness and mild alcoholic warmth going into the finish. Body is medium with an overall low level of carbonation. Okay, but rather dull. This bottle was not aged.

Bottled 330ml (Uba ja Humal)
Murky brown color, tiny beige head. Aroma has toffee and bread. Full-bodied. Loads of toffee, some bread. Low bitterness, lazy carbonation. Even a bit wineous. Sweet dessert beer, which lacks depth. A bit more hops next time.

Copper with no head. Aroma is phenolic vanilla, caramel, sweet aprictos. Taste is sweet sugar syrupy with malty bitter accents. A bit too heavy to drink. Still nice.
