Double Bastard Ale Brewed with Espresso Beans

Released in 2015

So, your knowledge of caffè is such that you’ve correctly determined that “depth-charged” refers to the addition of espresso-roasted coffee beans. Well, bully for you. For all I know, you picked that up hanging out at some coffee megachain amid a microcosmic mishmash of vapid layabouts, metro hipsters, and laptop-sporting exhibitionists trying to convince the world (and themselves) that they’re click-clacking out the great American-novel-cum-screenplay for a future summer blockbuster. I could surely teach you a thing or two were I inclined…which I’m NOT. Perhaps you’re eyeing my backside because you’re really into coffee. Nothing wrong there, but if you’ve come to me expecting some beery incarnation of your security blanket “me time” soy frappélatte or similarly dainty concoction, you’re in for some grande-sized disappointment. I do not exist to provide a comforting mode of conveyance for your jittery, caffeinated fantasies. Nothing about me is smooth, subtle or built for comfort. Those who should be holding this bottle (en route to opening and indulging in what awaits within) are really into ME. Get your cinnamon mochaccino fix elsewhere. This here’s strictly for adult men and women who don’t require the culinary crutch of added fat and sweeteners. My motto: Bold and brave or not at all.

Bomber from Costco Bakersfield. Nose is light toffee, expresso, and a hint of char. Clear rusty orange amber with a big heavy lacing beige head. Flavor is moderately bitter with contrasting sweetness, barleywine fruity, and a hint of the expresso. Kind of a coffeewine!

Part of a Stone event at Harry’s Hofbrau in Redwood City in November 2015. Score recorded at the time, but not detailed notes. Pours a cognac color and clear. The coffee blends nicely with this beer to make it a nice beer to drink on a warm night.

Bottle: Pours a copper brown color with a moderate beige head, leaving a thin ring about halfway through. The nose is dominated by coffee, very fresh roast and a little vanilla. Just the slightest hint of the base beer. Faintly sweet up front with fresh coffee and bits of vanilla, heavy roast in the finish. The coffee is strong in this one. Lingering bitters in the end. Not much of the base beer is noticeable here, but the coffee lovers should dig it… that being said I love coffee beers and this was a bit over the top for me. **After reaching room temperature, the coffee subsided a little bit and allowed the Double Bastard to get a little stage time. Much more enjoyable at this temp than the first 2/3 of the bottle.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: pours light brown with a light tan head. Aroma is some coffee and a lot of pine. Taste is some coffee and a whole lot of bitterness. Really bitter. Hard to drink rapidly. It is pretty nice, but damn, I am glad that I am done with it.

Bottle. It pours a mostly clear amber color with a khaki head. The aroma is a mix of coffee, caramel malt and piney hops. Pretty much as advertised. The flavor is the same. Bold caramel and toasty malts along with strong piney, earthy bitterness and some roasted coffee. Rough around the edges, as most Stone beers tend to be, but ultimately pretty satisfying. Not bad.

Pronounced, yet mild oak and peanut hull nose. Hazy rust, thin yellow head. Oak, with hints of smoke and elderberry. Full body, moderate carbonation, resinous. Not much in the way of espresso character, which I found to be an odd addition to the base beer anyway.

650ml bottle. Pours a clear, mahogany with a medium, long lasting, beige head that laces. Strong aroma of espresso, roasted malt and a lighter piney, hop note. Strong espresso flavour with roasted malt, caramel and a dry, bitter, piney hop finish. Medium to full body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Excellent.

Split a 22oz bottle on Christmas day. Poured a dark brown color, like standard Arrogant Bastard. Aroma was lots of coffee, roasted malts. Flavor was light toasted caramel notes, fresh coffee - almost a touch too green (like that green pepper note you can sometimes get from coffee). Okay, but was hoping for a touch more out of it.

Bottle - Dark roast and chocolate notes with lots of malts. Clear dark copper with a decent white head. Coffee roast, bitter hops and nice malts. Bit of chocolate on the finish. Surprisingly good.
