This beer is collaboration between Dogfish Head, Stone Brewing Co. (Escondido, CA) and Victory Brewing Company (Downingtown, PA).
The idea for this beer germinated way back in 2003 when the three guys (Sam from Dogfish, Greg from Stone and Bill from Victory) formed the BUFF alliance (Brewers United for Freedom of Flavor) - a noble endeavor with the goal to highlight the passion and camaraderie of the American craft brew movement.
So, BUFF didn't really do anything (beyond talk a lot of talk) until 2010 when the three brewers finally got together to jointly brew at beer at the Stone Brewery. Saison du BUFF was first brewed at Stone and then replicated at each of the other two breweries - same recipe, same ingredients, three different breweries throughout 2010. The brewers have a repeat performance planned for 2012!

12 oz. bottle, $3 @ Binny’s, Aug 2010. Pours a big head in my glass, with a nose of orange peel and thyme, Golden beer color beneath, just the slightest hint of haze, looking more like a kölsch. Foam stay nice and fluffy like a parfait top, supported by lots of bubble action. By now the smell has brought in the parsley and sage, but in pleasant proportions. Taste does not hide cheery beer taste behind a wall of spice. Rather, a familiar golden malt profile befitting the style, with a sprinkling of spices on top. Despite the spices being chosen just because of the Simon & Garfunkle song, they really work together well. Leaves a nice aftertaste of leaf herbs.

Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub this beer poured a yellow-golden color with a huge foamy white head that lingered and produced good lacing. The aroma was spicy, yeasty and citric with underlying oregano. The flavor was dry and spicy with notes of oregano, pepper, yeast and citrus. The finish was long and dry with notes of pepper, must and oregano. Medium body. Interesting.

bottle–pours an off white head with some lacing and hazy orange/gold color. Aroma is some earthy, medium malt. Taste is spice hops with some earthy notes, medium malt, yeast.

Pours slightly hazy gold with a 3 finger foamy white head. Aroma seems citrus and rosemary? Very strong herb/spice flavors. It has hot bits. Very refreshing. Sage makes it seem a bit funky.

Clear golden yellow coloured body with a dense soapy white head that leaves a fairly ugly lace and a trillion small bubbles rising from the bottom and sides of the glass. Aroma of hay, grass, caster sugar, coriander seed, white pepper and a touch of curacao. Medium-bodied; Very spicey flavour of herbs, grass, hay and a lot of yeast tucked in. Aftertaste is dry and herbal showing a lot of low a.a. hops as well. Overall, a nice saison and a pretty cool idea - on to hopefully sample the other two though. This was a good beer for the style and well worth sampling. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 04-October-2010, sampled in Newport News, Virginia on 13-October-2010.

Decided to try this after a good experience with the Victory version - it looks pretty dang great, but the nose first hits you with overpowering sage - since the Stone version was pretty much ruined by this herb, this does not bode well for this beer - however, some of the malt and earthy yeast profile manages to push its way through, as well as a bit tangerine tanginess - flavor is dry and somewhat flinty - crackery malts - bitterness from the hops, and especially the herbs is rather high, a bit too much so - somewhat abrasive herbal profile that crushes the nuance the yeast provides that made the Victory version so good - better than the Stone version, but still kind of soapy - lingering soapy bitterness - not as bad as the Stone version, but nowhere near the balance and tastiness of the version Victory made.

2010 bottle thanks to LtDan. Now I have had all three versions. Pours with a hazed vibrant gold body with a white head. Aroma is very minty, parsley is next, then rosemary. Also bready, candi sugar, plastic, grassy and hoppy. Dry and bitter flavors, grassy, hay, cat pee. Spicy. Lively and dry. Enjoyable, but the original Stone version was the best of the three.

From maniac @ 12th Richmond Gathering: Formaldehyde smell. Hazy yellow, medium head, good lacing. Slightly funked orange peel flavor. Alcohol noticeable. The weakest of the three SdB versions.

Aroma: The nose is lemony and herbal, with a few different spice notes, and a light fruitiness
Appearance: The pour is a mostly clear golden-orange color with a frothy, lacy white head
Flavor: The taste is big on spice, with some yeast/malt flavors as well as citrus and floral hops
Palate: The carbonation of this one is rather fizzy, it has a dry feel, and a medium body
Overall Impression: This is the first of the Saison Du Buff beers that I've gotten a chance to try, and I like it. It is some pretty good stuff. It's overly fizzy to the point of actually taking away from the beer, but it is still quite nice despite that. I hope to get to try the other two, as I found this one to be pretty enjoyable. A nice combo offering from these 3 quality breweries.

Sweet spice, light rosemary and floral notes. Sweet rosemary and floral flavor with some spicy notes.
