West Coast IPA by Slovenian craft brewer Lobik, probably the best known one from this country after Reservoir Dogs. Again many thanks to Davor for the can! Snow white, irregularly edged, open but moussy and stable head, misty apricot-tinged golden blonde robe. Aroma of grapefruit peel, frying red onion, lemongrass, pomelo, cheese-flavoured crackers, raw shallot, freshly cut dill, hints of dried apricot, lemonbalm and sorrel. Clean onset, sleek with some restrained green pear and unripe banana fruitiness, unripe mandarin and orange peel hoppiness palpable early on; medium carb, slick and oily body. Cracker-like, slightly sweet, bready maltiness aromatized and bittered by a firm zesty and grapefruity hop bitterness with a lovely old-fashioned oniony quality to it, making for a long finish in which the alcohol stays perfectly hidden. Very balanced, focused and fine-tuned IPA, perhaps a bit on the soft and hazy side for a ‘true’ West Coast IPA but then again this style was already waning and being replaced by the New England idiom when Slovenia (and other countries in the region) discovered American style craft brewing, so I guess you cannot really blame them for that – this kind of ‘softened’ West Coast IPAs are popping up more and more lately, and not only in Eastern Europe. Still, I do prefer the ‘true’ old school of West Coast IPAs from a time when NEIPAs did not exist yet – I am really getting old.
