The only slightly spicy Helles style lagger with its hint of rye shows off fully this lightly toasted chestnut barrel.
We are oh so incredibly excited to share the first (of hopefully many) chestnut puncheon (large wood cask) aged lagers with all you lovely people, with Rye Lagger! The only slightly spicy Helles style lagger with its hint of rye shows off fully this lightly toasted chestnut barrel.
Don’t expect your typical oak/vanilla/bourbon/etc flavor. This is something all it’s own.

500mL, undated bottle drunk 12/24/24.
Slightly gushing upon opening. Yet it remains clear. Burnished brass. VERY carbonated with a massive, white head.
Lightly spicy, nutty rye with light fruitiness and some soft wood tones. Light mineral, moderate wax from yeast. Not very deep in the malt character, that I can tell. Maybe even a bit of light, vanilla-like oxidation.
Fairly malty in the mouth, however, with an obvious chestnut wood flavor that is incredibly unique and interesting. Starts to gain some bright acidity like American oak, but quickly softens gaining light spice, chewy, meaty nut character and a lingering mineral and nutty finish. Definitely outshines the rye lager, but the maltiness is deep, round and sumptuous. Definitely more of a vessel for the chestnut aging, but it's clean and reasonably attenuated.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor shared. Pours a clear copper with a finger of beige head that lingers. Chestnut really dominates the nose with oak and lots of roasted chestnut. Very unique barrel character. Smooth with a sweet chesnut finish alongside peppery rye notes. Good balance and a fun autumn lager.

Bottle. Pours a clear dirty gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has earthy chestnut with a good amount of straw and some rye underlying. Flavor has lots of rye with a bit of straw and earthy chestnut not backing.
