Lapsing Into Heresy

A traditional Imperial stout, formulated and brewed with as close a proximity as attainable to the 19th Century primary style and form. Undecorated, elementary and devoid of any form of adjunct. Using only 3 heritage malts, 2 old world hop varieties and a single historic yeast culture. Succeeding 9 months tank maturation where a protracted transformation occurs. Noble, complex and ripened over time, combining a low dry finishing gravity with compounded lingering furnishings of deluxe dark chocolate, cinder toffee, sweet vanilla and intense dried fruit. A combination of noticeable alcohol warmth, dryness and high bittering makes this undoubtedly one to avoid if your a pastry stout devout.

Can. Near opaque dark brown beer, light comes through the edges. Good bubbly tan head. Quite an airy palate, semi dry, good fine minerally carbonation. The malts don't feel heavy for a 12.5% beer. A pleasant light smokiness rides over a touch of malt cream. Soft caramel underneath. Not getting any chocolate based flavours here. Ripe fruits on the back end layered with mild hop fruits and modest bitterness. Pretty light and crisp finish. A curious but tasty affair. If you had given this to me blind and told me it was a barleywine, I would have believed you. It's also pretty light all things considered. The flavours layer nicely, all of which makes it dangerously drinkable.

Draft at The Pup and Duckling 7 Year Anniversary beer festival. Poured a clear almost black colour with a reddish hue. The aroma is roasty malt, boozy alcohol. The flavour is moderate sweet, with a big, rich, roasty, molasses, light chocolate, big warm boozy alcohol bitter palate and a lingering warm alcohol bitter finish. Over medium bodied with soft carbonation. Didn’t really get many of the promised flavours and absolutely no vanilla. The alcohol was really dominant. Happy Birthday to The Pup!

440ml can, bought at Vinmonopolet Langnes. Rating session at Bergstua, shared with Finn. Black with a rustic shade, scattered lacing from a covering fawn-coloured head. Inviting smell of dried fruits and chocolate, nicly roasted. Rich taste character of grainy chocolate, liquorice, and a backdrop of dried fruits. Lingering roasted chocolate ending. Full bodied. Nightcap qualities. (Malangen 01.09.2022).

Can in the garden. 26th June 22. Pours a thin black stout. Aroma black treacle, soy, liquorice. Taste is black treacle, liquorice, soy, semi sweet, bitter, mouthfeel is far too thin, which really lets the beer down.

Panda at home, thanks to Fergus, 14/04/22. Black with a decent tan covering. Nose is dark malts, treacle toffee, light spice, mellow roast, cocoa powder, fruit cake, hint of liquorice. Taste comprises roasted bite, chocolate biscuit, spice, treacle toffee, dates, prunes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced kiss of alcohol. Sips easy for 12.5% ... decent straight up impy stout.
