Bourbon barrel aged stout with coffee added, conditioned on coconut.
Around the brewery, we listen to a lot of reggae, drink a fair share of coffee, and are devoted to our barrel aging program. In 2015, we had a one off imperial stout aging in barrels for close to a year. These barrels had a rich chocolate/vanilla character, but needed a boost. Stauf’s Coffee Roasters, of Columbus Ohio, nailed the perfect roast on some authentic Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, to compliment the barrel aged stout. Champion Ground was born! The Illustration on the label is of Charlie Ace’s Swing-a-ling mobile record shack which was notorious for broadcasting the “Champion Sound!” This version does it with fresh grounds, coconut, and good vibes all around!

375ml @ Phill's. Appearance: almost black with a dark beige head. Aroma: loads of sweet coffee with some creamy notes. Taste: along the same lines, quite sweet with a lot of coffee, not sure regarding coconut. Overall: too much coffee for me to get enough coconut.

375mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma reveals medium roasted malt, light coconut, and roasted coffee beans. Flavour reveals the fresh roast coffee beans upfront, accentuated by the bourbon barrels, and finishing with lots of coconut. Lots of coffee and coconut, and only subtle bourbon character. Complex and well-balanced. Excellent, but overpriced.

50cl bottle shipped from the brewery, pours an oily black. Nose has toasted coconut, clear jalapeno, toast. Weird. Flavor is chewy malt, toast, brown sugar, sweet Vietnamese coffee. Chewy finish. Not great.

Sample at the brewpub during Jackie O’s 12th Anniversary Extravaganza on 01/06/2018. Brown-black pour with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes gradually to a film. Small patches of lacing. The aroma consists of bourbon, coffee, coconut and malt. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky bourbon, toasted coconut, coffee and chocolate malt. The finish is oaky with a bourbon and coconut aftertaste. Very good beer all around.
