PHONOGRAPH maple smoked porter

Double the maple, double the fun. 🍁πŸ”₯

Most of the smoked beers here at S&O use Beechwood Smoked Malt. However, the brew team wanted to try something a little different for our latest smoked beer addition. A maple twist!

Maplewood Smoked Malt provides a deep, rich smokiness, like the embers at the end of a perfect campfire. Maple syrup was then added to the boil for a round sweetness and pleasant maple whispers.

With two Maple variations, wood and syrup, Phonograph provides highs and lows on the front and the back of the palate. A subtle hint of maple, rich dark chocolate and velvet smoke stack up to create a luxurious, balanced porter that satisfies from roasty start to lingering, long finish.

Let Phonograph sit on the counter for 20 minutes or so, before cracking the can and pouring. Enjoying this beer at a warmer temp will pull out even more maple notes.

Can, special procurement. Dark brown. Thin head. There's some nice chocolate syrup on the nose, but it's so much bigger and better on the palate. Rich bitterness, layers of toasty, chocolatey dark malts, some alcohol and a bit of maple. Was expecting a maple and/or smoke bomb but both of those elements are quite restrained, actually.

Good blackish brown body and okay medium beige foam. Excellent smoked grain aroma, soft maple, though it could be stronger. Taste is chewy barley, soft cocoa, lingering smoked grain. Smooth finish, the maple helps accent things but I was hoping it would have a starring role.

Can from The Gull, North Vancouver
Black colour with brown head. Aroma of smoke and burnt wood. The mouthfeel is soft, smooth quite dry, the roasted malt dominates, ashes, burnt wood, and some smoke. A bit monodimensional, but it's robust.

A pour from 16oz can. Courtesy of Alex. Appearance: hazy brown with a beige head. Aroma: smoky and peaty, meh. Taste: along the same lines, tons of smoke, peat, roasty aftertaste. Overall: not my thing at all.
