Originally, a curious mistake that resulted in an all-new-beer-style we liked to call…Irresponsible. We’ve upgraded this Sweet Release with the addition of Whole Cane Sugar for a delightfully unrefined experience.

Unrefined Shugga’ is our winter-warming, holidaze BarleyWine, clocking in at 10% alc./vol. It’s chockfull of malted barley, malted wheat, Munich malt, and crystal malts, then generously dry-hopped with Simcoe, Columbus, Cascade, and Centennial hops. Unrefined Shugga’ gets its name from the addition of whole cane Panela sugar. It’s basically the holidays in a glass.

Bottle. Clear, reddish-brown with a three finger head. Aroma is a sweet, IPA smell. Taste is sweet but a tad too hoppy.

Poured up on tap at Tipsy Cactus where it exhibits a crystal clear copper colored body that supports a light tan head of foam. The aroma offers up plum and date like dark fruity esters as well as thin molasses and a faint caramel sensation. The taste delivers a pleasing blend of plum to date like sweet fruity esters, molasses and then a modest pine hop and mild sappy bitterness. This is working really well with pleasing balance and depth. Dangerously good.

Pours a copper color with a malty aroma with toffee and piney hops. The flavor is strong with caramel malt and resinous bitterness that’s a bit abrasive. It reminds me somewhat of arrogant bastard. This definitely tastes boozier though.

$3.50 bottle, WW. Clear amber with a small beige head. Malty nose without any specific aromas. Resin, licorice, pine, malt, sugar, some spruce, spice. Interesting, a bit too sweet (not cloying).

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear, darkish mahogany with a large creamy/foamy beige head. Aroma of toffee suggesting brown sugar. Arguably full bodied. Flavor is toffee, something like demerara sugar, and definite citrus/pine aspects. Not dry, yet bitter. Clean and exquisite flavor.

12 ounce bottle. Orange, copper color. Large frothy beige head endures. Toasted malt aroma hints at brown sugar and dried fruit. Flavor upfront is toasted malt, resiny pine, dried fruit, toffee and burnt sugar. Sticky mouthfeel. Mildly complex. 10% ABV is well hidden.
