Beer commissioned by a marksmen’s guild in Deize (west of Ghent) and brewed by nearby Sint-Canarus; at De Sterre, a restaurant close to the castle of Ooidonk in the same region. Cheers Goedele! Thick and frothy, foamy, snow white, cobweb-lacing, dense and lasting head; initially clear warm and deep ‘old golden’ robe with honeyish glow, turning hazy with sediment added in the end. Aroma of white bread, cereals, honey, field flowers, red apple slices, thyme, wholegrain crackers, apricot, unripe peach, grass and a slight hint of banana. Crisp, fruity onset, sweetish but not overly so, impressions of red apple peel, unripe peach and some banana, very sharply carbonated with very minerally effect lasting through the entire beer; cereally and white-bready maltiness with grain husk-like core but a light touch of honeyish sweetness as well, in the end bittered by a floral, moderately spicy, bit earthy hoppiness which last for a while but never overrules the malt sweetness lingering equally long. Some bready and spicy yeasty accents here and there too, but generally remaining quite clean and crisp. Decent but stereotypical Belgian style blonde, adding nothing at all to this old category, but serving its purpose as a balanced, quite elegant easy drinker.
